Hi I'm Tom Stickney and today I want to talk to you about long irons. If you're one of the few players that still carry long irons like I do. You know 2 3 or 4 iron you going to find that these guys can be tough to hit unless you get some alterations. The 1st thing you do is you go it's long irons that are easier to hit. Here I have an M4 this particular long iron from TaylorMade is really easy to get up in the air I want something that I don't have to work very hard to get up in the air I don't need a blade I don't play enough. So the 1st thing to do is get a club that hits it up in the air like this one. the second thing we're going to do is we're going to make sure we get our long irons like our wedge and what I mean by that is our transitional tempo is going to be very smooth. If you get in hereand you jerk it down from the top it's going to be really really difficult for you to do with your capable of this to be really difficult hit it solid.

The whole key to long irons is catching this ball right in the center of the blade so it has a chance to go high enough and carry far enough. If you swing it like a wedge it's a lot more complex, picture in mind of hey this is an easy shot. So what I like to do is go to practice facility and set up to these longer irons swing them really easy, and this slowly ramp my speed back up tilli I am at full speed. The key for me is transitional tempo and allow the club to gather speed and if the club can gather speed not be ganked down from the top. You're going to go a lot better on long irons and you're going to be more effective but I'll promise you if you take a 1000 shots and you have a hybrid and a 1000 shots versus your long iron probably be better off with a hybrid here again there are some exceptions.
