Hi I'm Tom Stickney and today I want to talk to you about fairway woods and hit these guys a bit more effectively. On the biggest thing I see with amateurs is they usually have a 3 wood or a 5 wood in their bag. When they come up to a shot the 1st and they do is when they can't hit the green is 3 wood yes maybe more distance. The 1st thing we do is take a look at the lie if the lie is sitting down then the 3 wood doesn't sit very high, and the ball doesn't sit very high it makes it really hard to get that ball up in the air. We want the 3 wood to sit lower the ball to sit higher so we catch it a little bit more effectively.

So if you don't have a perfectlie the 1st thing I would do is use the 5 wood. Now let's say we decided we're going to hit this club where this is 3 or 5 wood Fairway woods or the longest flatest clubs in the bag they are designed to sweep they have to get the ball and they stay low to the ground for the golf ball coming up. If you try help at all here yours is going to have the club bottom out here it's going to come up the ball you get hit it thin or you can top it and it rolls on the ground. So for a fairway wood what I want to focus in on what is draging this club along the ground as long possible post impact if I could do that ball is going to go up in the air. So here we go dragging along the ground post impact and we will be in good shape. So there's a little bit of exaggeration stayed down through it make it ball work a lot better. So remember sweep your fairway woods but make sure you see the lie so you have the right one in your hand.
