Tom Stickney – A Top 100 Golf Teacher
In this week's tip I want to talk to you about the old pesky rough. We've driven off the fairway here and the ball kind of sitting down. The 1st thing I want to look at is my lie analysis I want to make sure that I can put a club on this ball there's a big difference between a bad lie and a horrible lie. If you have a horrible I take your licks chop in the fairway and be done with it. This is just a reasonable average line of rough ball going to sit half up and half down going to obviously hit over here to the right of these palm trees get it back in play. So the 1st thing I want to do is make sure I pick a club that helps me to get through this rough and get to the golf ball. So take your licks don't be hero don't try to hit a 3 wood out here take a mid iron. I have a 6 iron right here and I'm just going to chop it out and play. The 2nd thing I want to do is I want to make sure that I set my wrist just a little bit quicker I want to increase my angle of attack.
So less grass gets between the ball and the club face and when we do that all of a sudden now we have an ability to get the ball kind of going where we want. Remember you're not going to have as much control of the rough as you normally do so the less grass we have between the ball club in the club face the better we're going to be. So here we go we've got the right club we're going to set it up just a little bit quicker so when come down just a little bit steeper, and there you go. You can see I went into the ground just a little bit deeper and that's on purpose because I'm trying to get less stuff between the ball in the club face and now the ball squirted it out there to the right on the right side of the fairway and now I'm set to get try to get up and down for par.
