Increase Power Setup with Shoulders Closed - Senior Golf Tip (Video) - by Dean Butler

So, you want to get some more power into your game of golf. Okay. So, what will it take? What will you do to get that extra power? Have you been out in the practice ground, have you been trying to work on sort of throw your hand at the ball more, throw your body, swing longer? Of course, those things won’t work at all. All it will do is put more and more effort into what you’re trying to do, but it won’t achieve the actual goad. So, what I’m going to do is I’m going to show you a very simple way of actually getting a lot more power into that shot. You take the normal setup and the only difference we’re going to do is we’re going to remove the shoulders. We’re going to close. Here are the shoulders running parallel to our target line, just the line with my feet. What I’m going to do is bring the shoulders around to the right-hand side, so the shoulders are now going into a closed position.

So, if put that club down and set myself up and just bring that left shoulder forward, so now you can see my shoulders are closed. What that will do is that will actually create a bigger shoulder turn. So, if I keep shoulder and swing the club back you can see now I’ve really got a full shoulder turn. By doing a full shoulder turn and by having those shoulders closed to start with, brings that club on the inside. Now, with all you thinking about it, when that club comes on the inside and you turn your shoulders and your hips, the weight naturally transfers back. From here, as we bring the club back down so we’ve gone inside, we’re now hitting out, the weight is now transferring through and because we’ve got such a good shoulder turn, this weight is not transferring back into that ball more so than what you would have done had you just stood there with a parallel setup, so the key is to keep that shoulder here, take the club back, good shoulder turn as we come through that weight will pull you all the way through and it really gives you a lot more power for sure without any doubt whatsoever.

Very, very simple tip and just to demonstrate I’ll just hit a ball in the direction of the range and just show you the effect because it is quite simple to do. So, again, I’ve got the club behind the ball, I’ve lined myself up, but I’m putting the shoulder forward, so it feels hunched, feels like the Hunchback of Notre-Dame. Get that shoulder forward, pull that shoulder forward. This is now going to bring that club on the inside, watch the shoulder turn from here. Shoulder forward, shoulder turn. Wow! That shoulder forward has got that club going back on the inside, big shoulder turn and from there the weight naturally comes forward. Remember, if you transfer the weight back there is every chance that you’re going to get the weight forward, but if you don’t transfer that weight, that weight is going to stay static. Very simple tip. Close those shoulders, which means aim the shoulder slightly to the right and just reap the benefits.
