Backswing Length Series by Tom Stickney Tom Stickney - A Top 100 Golf Teacher Tom Stickney – A Top 100 Golf Teacher

Hi I'm Tom Stickney Golf Magazine Top 100 Instructor and today were going to talk about backswing length. A lot of times as you see in the left frame here people tend to get their back when just a little short and tight while I am all for control of the backstroke the one thing I want to caution you on is we all get older is whenever the backswing starts to get to short is very very difficult to sequence the downstroke effectively because when you have a backswing that is this condition right here and it's short tight to the extreme you don't have a lot of time to move the lower body forward let the hands arms follow and then move the golf ball effectively. What I will what I see a lot of times the hips will start and the head fall back because you're just working so hard downstairs move through it that you just can't catch up with your pivot everything is kind of out of sync.

Now this gentleman does it very successfully he is a pretty good player but we want to make sure that it's that we get the back stroke length just a little bit longer so we can do what we are capable of. Now as you can see as the John has a back of this position right here there's top of his back to appear when we lifted it out just a little bit it doesn't take a lot for the sequencing of the pivot in the right frame to look a little bit more smooth and what you can see in the right frame as he takes it back we just told him to lengthen it out just little bit. Now it's amazing how we just went from basically here to here OK and look at the picture in the background that's not a gigantic difference that we were talking about probably you know 3 4 5 6 inches tops but all the sudden when John had that little bit extra time in the right frame he had a little bit more time to move his hips forward and everything kind of moves through together a little bit more effectively.
