Swing Building - Lesson by PGA Pros Pete Styles & Matt Fryer

Consistency for all golfers is a key attribute that most people will try to improve as they get better at the game of golf. In this video, PGA golf professionals Pete Styles and Matt Fryer will explain the process of making a balanced golf swing from start to finish. How a one piece takeaway, utilizing a rotation of the shoulders instead of a handsy and wrist dominated motion can improve the simplicity of a swing. We also focus on a shorter golf swing and then a committed follow through without a hitting action.

So to be able to be a successful golfer one of the things that we're going to have to do is be consistent if we can repeat the same actions and know what sort of shots we're going to hit hopefully we should be able to deliver some consistent swings. So Pete what would you suggest you know some tips or advice towards what we would do to go about building a consistent golf swing? I work very much on the fact that if we want the ball to do a consistent thing as in we want the ball to do the same thing every time we as the golfer we control the golf ball don't forget we as a golfer have to do the consistent thing every single time. So we want to be the same so the golfer can be the same. Golf in a nut shell should be a fairly simple sport to be consistent up because it doesn't move you don't move the target doesn't move and on comes to take off or tackle you. So if I can stand to the golf ball in the same way that gives me the best chance of swinging the club in the same I definitely looking for a repeatable action. So a set up that's consistent would have the same with the stance every time and you can take a measurement using your club. I like to think that my outside of my shoulders is going to be the instep of my feet that gives me a platform that gives me balance and it's consistent the same every time. Definitely same stance what would be then looking at next? The next checkpoint would be to make sure that I'm the right distance away from the golf ball. So bringing the club down so it lands just above my knee is my really simple check point to how far away we are. I understand that if I get too near my swing might be the same but my impact position won't be able to hit in consistent shots like what's too far away so I'm consistently measured the same distance away all of the time.

What will we look at next and where we're going to? I'm building a nice consistent grip my hand position should be the same. Ideally it would be a good grip but most importantly it's the same every time my hands have so much influence over the club if I change how my position dramatically changing where the golf ball will go to as well. It's really working on making sure my hand position is the same every single time. So then now you've built a consistent set up. Agreed I think so yeah I think once I've got that I've got the keys to making a consistent swing. OK so where would we be going with that then? What would we look at first would be something in you take away? I think very much so I think I'd like to lead the club back in a consistent fashion. We often talk about using big muscles not little muscle. OK would it be something where your like these big muscles little muscle everything working in one piece or is it the arms go first shoulders go first what is it that your triggering this take away? With our theory of the one piece there much very much feels like the triangle here between the golf club and the arm is all going to move away from the golf ball at the same time. A one piece take away to a round about hip level now the hands and the arm start to work up a little bit more to the top we create a longer back swing but it's very much the body starts that rather than just the hands and the arms independently. Definitely I think one of the big problems we will tend to see that in that it is very much the hands and the arms doing it and I like that theory of getting everything working as one early on that we're going to get the whole body functioning as one unit from here. What would we then go into top of the back swing?

I think a consistent swing would often look like a shorter swing something that's around about 2 o'clock not 3 o'clock or beyond particularly with the irons. 2 o'clock like the swing tends to be more consistent moving down to an impact position that stay super balanced I should get a consistent strike middle of the club head not the time not the heel not falling forwards so balance would be crucial through the downswing. In transition parts definitely I think balance sometimes is one thing that is massively overlooked if you're off balance it's going to be very hard like say to deliver that consistent strike in which you know we're talking about consistent golf swing here so to cap it all off what will be to look for to finish this consistent golf swing I'd like to see that from the setup to the back swing through to a really nice balance position. I think if I can hold this balance position the same every time and I'm stood watching the golf ball lands. In my balance I feel like I've done the same thing each time and it goes right back to the start or if I do the same thing hopefully the ball goes as well. Excellent and a really really good striker you know so very very simple tips there in a really you know a good way to think about the golf swing. If you can start and build a consistent set up you've got a better chance of actually delivering a more consistent golf swing and thus delivering a consistent strike and seeing some more repeatability in the golf shots have a go at those tips and see if that can help you build a more consistent golf swing.
