Consistent Swing - Lesson by PGA Pros Pete Styles & Matt Fryer

Making a consistent golf swing is often described as the holy grail for all golfers. In this video PGA professionals Pete Styles and Matt Fryer will talk you through a process of making a more balanced golf swing which creates a shorter backswing and more controlled follow-through. This coupled with some simple swing thoughts and a well rehearsed routine should result in a simplified and therefore more consistent golf swing.

I think when I am delivering golf lessons Matt on a day to day basis there is one word that I can copy and paste into my clients notes and that would be consistency. Definitively that whats the game is all about the more consistent we are the better we are going to be. We will ask a golfer “What would you like o see better in your game?” and you might be sitting at home thinking what would I like to see better in my game and the word that comes up over and over again is consistency. As golfers we all have experienced that highlight of hitting the ball perfectly. Yeah exactly you get on a nice hot streak and you just put the club up to the ball and you know it is going to go where you want it to go. Then 2 holes later it's not, it's not it's exactly that. We all have hit that perfect tee shot on the 1st hole we think today is my day you go down the fairway go sideways into the bushes and you go today is not the day, and the consistency of playing good golf day in day out is what probably brings us back to the driving range encourages us to take lessons on that 1st week in week out isn't it. Exactly yeah if we can find it you know we repeated our good stuff over and over again we're going to be in a better position. Looking at good plays it's definitely the thing that pays the bills is consistency week in week out being a high up on the leader board shooting under par in a regular basis. So we know we want it we know it's important, but how do we find out how we find consistency? Yeah it is great talking point isn't it and I think there's a couple of things we can do but you know it's a technical wise is what we'd like to do is make sure we've got a good set up I think is number one is always going to be a good starting point for any any consistent golfer. If you are consistently standing to it well you're going to be able to put a better swing of string on it hopefully. I always look at it as the ball doesn't move in the target doesn't move so if you don't move as well then then you've got some consistency. So you're suggesting that we set the ball for that particular club the same every time? Exactly yeah if we can try and replicate what they are set up each and every time you'll be able to hopefully put the same swing on it in terms of the actual swing something that I'd suggest looking for is just shortening a little bit.

If we look to a lot of tall players we're not seeing a lot that are swinging past parallel or swinging too long we actually see something where we get a bit of a 3 quarter swing almost a feeling that we shorten our swing down just so we have a little bit more of an element of control over it. It's not that its you know too long and too flowing you're swinging within our selves a bit more. So we might be sacrificing a little bit distance but for the longer term gain of consistency would be a valid trade-off for most players. Definitely yeah if you can just have that swing a little bit more under control I'd say you know, and your sometimes you're not going to sacrifice the distance as well because if you are swinging more controlled you're more likely to get a centered strike. If your swinging longer and you haven't got control of that golf club chances are you're probably not going to deliver their club back to where you want to on the ball. So the shorter swing gives a better strike which in turn gives a more distance anyway? Definitely yeah and then as you alluded to earlier no you go out you play some good golf. Your aiming the club you swinging the club it's happening and one of the things that we tend to find when we speak to the better players when they talk about these hot streaks that they get on to is the feeling of sort of cruise control. Now if you related it back to you driving to work every day. I wouldn't imagine you're thinking of taking the same turn like pull out of my driveway turn left here you just do it automatically you get into simple thoughts and autopilot. So if we can sort of get our heads a little bit freer and clearer hopefully we should be able to just let the golf swing happen instead of having a 101 thoughts and it's not clear of what we're actually doing we over thought what we are actually trying to do. So we've got a good set up we've got a slightly shorter back swing we've got simple thoughts. Now how about this follow through position what we need to see there? We just need to turn to the target in the finishing we need to be balanced if you can get like we say those points you've alluded to you get over and all your thinking of now what you've got in here is right just hit to the target and just turn to my target is to finish and hold my finish point.

We'll see nice easy golf shots from that so we've got that same start position but we've also got the same finish position so more consistency in your technique start to finish. I would think if I see a golfer and they step through one golf ball like this and then they step through the next ball like this I think well where is the consistency. There must have been something going wrong in your swing but if you've got point At he same and you've got point B the same then the bit between those 2 will be to the same route more consistently. Exactly if we can start and finish in the same manner every time the likelihood is that middle bit will probably be the same and if we've got clearer thoughts you've got out of our own way well like let's let the golf swing actually happen instead of thinking of all the different wonderful things that we all tend to think when things are not going our way. So the consistent physical position start and finish consistent mental approach that's slightly shorter swing hopefully all of those points in a package will start to enable you to not only hit the ball better but hit the ball better more consistently play better more consistent golf and score better on a more consistent basis.
