Holing Chips - Lesson by PGA Pros Pete Styles & Matt Fryer

In this video tip PGA golf professionals Pete Styles and Matt Fryer will focus in detail on how you can improve your chipping to get the ball close to the hole every time. We will start by looking at the correct club selection to ensure the right flight on the golf ball. Next we will focus on an accurate ball strike and show you the techniques to ensure a crisp contact every time. The last point will be focusing on how golfers should aim to practice their short game more frequently in order to improve this valuable part of the game.

I think it's fair to say Matt that most golfers when they go out to play they're looking for the best score possible. Definitely yeah that's the aim of what we're trying to be here for is to go out there and score the best possible score. The lower the better the lower, the better you say. So then to improve your score look at one part of your game that you think can improve your score that much people often look at the driver the tee shots their fairway woods. Some people who would actually suggest a lot of golfers are missing a trick of the chip and pitch shot. True very true so pitching on the green and chip shot and it relates quite heavily to putting because often people say to me or our 3 over that shot I didn't hole enough putts the way you putt in from 35 feet out. Well how many 35 year old you hole?

Like well how did you get on to the green well I had this is this 20 yard chip and headed to 35 feet. Well there's the fault you can't blame the putting if the chipping wasn't good you've left yourself too much work if you doing that. work Dave Peltz great short game coach he talks about it's not how you putt it's where you putt from, and this shot the chip shot that we're going to look at is often going to set up the where do you putt from. Yeah 100 percent and there's a couple of things that we can understand that's going to help us you know a get it closer get that putt a lot easier for us and I think firstly you know once you've assessed the situation what chip your faced with whether it needs to be you know a chip and run does it need to be a pitch does it need to be a lob shot. Then you can start to get the right club for the actual shot. You know a lot of people say where they could be playing the chip and run there's nothing in front of them they've got 20 yards they could chip and run and try to get it rolling like a putt and the stood with the lob wedge trying to hit that high soft floating one stopping it one yard from the pin. Which is going to be difficult you know to land it on a pinpoint as opposed to just rolling the ball out there with a chip and run is going to be difficult. So the high shot is harder to hit than the low shot in your opinion? Definitely yeah if you can get it running a bit more like a putt easily and quickly it's going to be a lot more control the ball. So shot selection for me is key making the right choice making the right one. Playing devil's advocate and what about that situation you can't play the low when you've got to play the high one? OK so once you've done that obviously you should be selecting the right club and if your have to play a high shot and your stood there with a 7 or 8 iron thinking you're going to get that up in the air we're entering a world of trouble. So once we've seen the situation then it's choosing the right club for the situation. So you know if you get in your higher shots are going to be faced down with more of the lob wedge the sand wedge more of the running shots maybe a 7, 8, and 9 iron and as we do that. It's interesting all those conversations happened we haven't even addressed the ball we looked at the shot and I think that's the key thing on the golf course isn't it. We've got to have quite a big thought process before we hit this we can't just run up we're near the green so it must be a pitching wedge then start thinking that. You have to think by your bag haven't you? Yes 100 percent yeah once you've done that then you're getting into right OK what do I want to do with the ball, and one of the common things you know I'll see in chipping one of the errors is trying to help it up in the air quite a lot. You know we've selected let's say here I'm going to be hitting a little pitch shot where I've got my 52 degree wedge out it's got 52 degrees of loft on it it's going up in the air. It'll do it let the club do the work what we need to do is make sure we're actually going to get a good strike on it now because we've got the loft we've got the grooves on the face and that's going to get it in the air for us. So what we're looking for and one of my things to chip it closer every time would be let's take a good setup where we now see that sternum just slightly in front of the ball so we've got the weight in our lead foot that we can see that you're well in front of a club I mean exactly and then from here I'm going to make a crisp contact and to do that I need to be hitting down on the golf ball. So you go in the air but you're suggesting you hit down on a golf ball? Definitely like we alluded to a minute ago we've got a lot of loft, let's let that do the hard work for us we'll just make sure we get the good contact and to do that we need to deliver a bit of a descending blow. So once you've made the right shop selection the right club selection and we've got a good strike comes down to practice you know seeing how far it might be certain lengths of swing how far our ball travels so for me if I was chipping to the end there.

Nice crisp shot I did it was half a yard from a designated spot. So once I get into that it might be that you go on practicing you put a target down you know a hula hoop some clubs you know sort of box area and you practice landing it certain distances in seeing certain shots. Because this isn't the glamorous part of practice is it? It's not I mean imagine the ball a 1000000 miles and maybe this is where people are lacking in not focusing enough they're not doing enough practice. Exactly they are not doing it enough and once you get good if you see you know on tour everyone can hit the ball they can all strike it the guys who are winning the guys you are putting good numbers in when they make a mistake and they don't hit a green you can bet that they're knocking it stoned out and taking a lot of pressure off that next putt. So it's that concept of getting up and down more from when they do miss the green holing monstrous putts by putting the ball close with the wedges. You know if you see it just how easy is it to knock a tap in. So if you can chip it close by making the right shot selection be the right club selection and then you put the practice in to know how to hit the shots you're going to have more of those stress free tap ins. Hopefully those tips that Matt's talk to us through there and in particular the point about encouraging you to practice hopefully encourage you to get out there do some good work and next time on the golf course when you are on the green rather than filling it with fear it will fill you with excitement an opportunity this is my chance to do that hard work or show that hard work with what I put into practice. Some close hole the putt and watch your scores fall when you chip it stone dead.
