Stop Your Over The Top Golf Swing – (Video) Lesson by PGA Pros Pete Styles and Matt Fryer

In this video tip PGA golf professionals Pete Styles and Matt Fryer show you how a simple change to your set up can dramatically affect your swing path direction and therefore change the flight of your golf shot. By addressing the golfball with a slightly retracted right foot for the right-handed golfer, you will feel like you're aiming to the right of the intended target which in turn creates a swing path that is again right of the intended target. This coupled with a club face that aims left of the swing direction through impact, will reduce the amount of curvature and slice spin that you impart on the golf ball and will start to create a ball flight that moves right to left, and creates a much desired drawing golf shot.

Matt bear with me as I explain the reason why I'm going to get you to aim nowhere near your target. OK I hope you all believe took place 1st please do. Normally we ask golfers to I'm pretty close to their intended target this exercise and I am going to ask Matt to aim nowhere near his intended target, but follow this train of thought a lot of golfers slice the golf ball. If you slice the golf ball this tip is for you because if you slice it all full chances are you are swinging over the top. You might have heard the term used by your play in part by your friends or my golf coach who has told you you're swinging over the top your swing direction is not straight your so in direction is across how can we train you to get your swing direction straight or find a Ming incorrectly OK go ahead and take a normal square sound and set up to show the viewers what this would normally look like on camera so you see that we've got our favorite Propofol noodle outlasts was not called face directly after and then my body my shoulders my knees and my feet a parallel to the wire now that everything just west of the map and asked the noodle after target with his I was just south of all the target line covered and I cannot make you swing from the if he is a slice of the golf ball. He comes over the top and swings across hundreds when directing goes left of the intended target and it cuts away this way now it's much struggling to get back on line what I'm going to suggest is that your way to the right taught me through the feelings of why you should aim right. OK So what we're going to do is leave the club face here or we're going to aim club face right as well going to aim club face down the right and so I want to know if I set up down so I'm going to be hear a little bit more.

The idea is now that I'd be swinging if we're trying to swing neutral I'd be swinging out to the right to the target as we know and one of the common things we see with slice is how many times you know people watching this video now when you have been a slice. So it's it's getting worse I'm going to add even further away and compound this problem even more I mean less to the compensate you got you over correcting. Exactly yeah it just the. Almost cements the fall in 4 years so they like doing the opposite this thrill of drawing that left drawing the right foot back yet will now are encouraged to go for the swing pull down the right hand side I'm going to hit a couple of shots for me to see whether the ball does try so as we do this we've got that we say now it's looking different to the original won't get that we'll see 20 yards right we see the swing go quite aggressively to the right that because the body in the stands made it go to the right side to pull that sets off to the right of the noodle. For a lot of golfers who slice the golf pulled up well would then go to the to the right yes that is the club fight would not be correct now we're going to do an exercise where we aim the club straight. OK The feet to the right and I'm going to ask Matt to roll the roll the face a little bit to encourage the club face to aim to the left of the intended stance on the edge of the alignment line at the point of impact from the foot from that now I want you to do that. OK I want your full face to be square Yes and I feel that and I'm swinging down my body line is not the idea yet and that if away from it.

There you go so in the past Matt has come over the top if he's got a slice his fault now he's swinging much more from the inside line and what's going to get a really intense feeling not even in the past this doesn't feel anything like this. Matt still been a bit down over this side now he's swinging out towards me and he comes all the people by this withdrawal if you've never seen the draw this might be the 1st coming up next here the feeling. Will fight not want to play a lot of yeah all go together so that the feeling for me was that you know you said that. This why when I'm coming across myself I really feel that my hands are being sucked in so much also as you got me to stand here and follow my body lines I felt so much extension of my arms and my hands away from the toll so it was a totally different feeling for me and that's really what we're aiming for there is quite an intense change and quite intense feeling you can go to the practice ground by drawing that rifle the way from the target for the to right handed golfer shooting courage more brutal fight shooting for just going to the right a little bit a control of the clubface to draw the ball back in like that I'll be the 1st time you see the ball drawing now long serve out what I would then encourage you to do is bring your feet gradually more and more square so I actually I want to long term aim back the target don't get this wrong I'm not encouraged with the right to talk long so we're going back to the square foot because we've had the feeling of swinging from the inside hope meaning maintain some of the feeling definitely a lot like said I extend human failing for me now it's very apparent So isn't it when I just say I've got myself square now but trying to draw on those feelings that I had from when I was in this direction to see if we stop the slice. I can tell you hired I'm hired as a coach so I was a good coach for the long term solution studies get find a nice try to remember the feelings of the saving to the right gave on the stand that the changes in the past you can control faces. Well what you should start these left over top swings less slices less pulled shots in a way as well and if we end that with a straight shot. Fantastic a draw shot right a little fade not the end of the world either long as it is that manageable slicing shot that comes from an over the top swing and that Matt is how aiming badly can help you play better golf.
