Soft vs Packed Lie Bunker Shots by Tom Stickney Tom Stickney - A Top 100 Golf Teacher Tom Stickney – A Top 100 Golf Teacher

Hi I'm Tom Stickney Golf Magazine Top 100 Instructor and today I want to talk to you about the differences between fluffy lies and hard pact sand lies in the bunker. You know a lot of times people talk to me about you know I don't know how to play the 2 different shots and I have a problem well the thing you can do is you can see having pushed a lot of sand over here and you see this fluffy lie sitting up on a big tuft of sand. Here let's take it all the sand away to see right here in here and I have more of hard pack in the bunker so if you want to simulate your own golf course at home fluffy versus hard pack lies you can do so just by moving the sand around that's the 1st thing. The 2nd thing is you need to understand how these 2 lies react it's all about friction OK here what I have hard pack sand I'm not going to have as much friction and the ball is going to jump out of it quicker. So in order to come in and hit shots here you don't have ht them as hard but also you don't want to come at this ball very steep because if you come at the hard packed lie very steep what's going to happen is the club is going to bounce the ball and go across the back of the green.

So all you want to do on this hard pack sand is take a little bit longer and lower and not swing at it quite so hard. So hard packed lie here we go and look at longer lower don't swing quite as hard and you see the ball jumps out with very little effort. Now when you have the fluffy lie right here it always has a lot of loose sand lot more friction so what you're going to have to do is you're going to have to make sure that you kind of go down after a little bit more and you can have to make sure you pivot through it and you finish with your right shoulder moving more forward. So here you have a little bit more wrist hinge to get down at the sand and go ahead and keep your pivot moving keep the right shoulder going or you're going to get stuck by the sand so the fluffy lie a little bit more wrist hinge and have a little bit more pivot speed allow the right shoulder and you can see how hard I swung that ball barely got on the front part of the green. So remember different lies are all about friction and attack angle take some time work with it you're going to have some fun.
