Hi I'm Tom Stickney Golf Magazine Top 100 Instructor and today I want to talk to you about the lie on the rough. Sometimes you have lie that are sitting down like you see at the U.S. Open is tough to gal example out but one thing you have to be careful of is not trying to do too much. You want to make sure that you have a loft to get this ball out of the grass all too often to see people in these lies are trying to hit hybrids you know the 2 or 3 woods or 4 irons or what have you and it's just the loft is not conducive to get the ball out of the grass. Now anybody can take a 9 to 7 on the kind of chop out here but let me show you I have a 5 iron right here let me show you how to hit a little bit longer club out of this grass and give you a little bit extra help because there are some times when you're going to need to get out of this rough.

The 1st thing you're going to do is you're going to open the blade just a little bit when you open the blade just a little bit yes the ball is going to have a tendency to score to the right but it's going to be easier to get on the right it won't score too for the right because the grass will kind of take some spin off of it but basically we want to open it up just a little bit. The worse the lie the more you open it up you know the 2nd thing we want to do is have a little bit quicker wrist hinge we want to make sure the wrist with the hinge quicker so you can chop down on the golf ball. So all I'm going to do is an open the blade just a little bit and I want to set my wrist a little bit quicker off the start so I can chop down that golf ball and I really want to make sure I feel like I'm going down through it like it's a little punch shot. So here we go open the blade set the wrist chop down, and when I do that all I'm trying to do is kind of squeeze it out of there and make sure it kind of goes where I want it might scored a little bit right but it's not going to go to for the right. So remember open the blade set the wrist off the start if you can do that you can have a lot easier time get this ball out of the rough.
