When you chipping one of the most vital pieces of it is the strike itself. Now a lot of people try to make the strike really precise and you don't have to. So if we look at this example here, I've just got an alignment stick, and if we think about the wedge, if we look here, if I place it on top of the stick, you can see that the leading edge is a fraction up off the stick. We want this piece here, which is the back of the sole, or commonly known as the bounce to make a lot of the contact on the ground.

So if we think of the bounce coming in, like a plane landed on the ground, it will ride the ground for four to five inches before it takes off again. That means that the strike doesn't need to be really precise, and we keep the leading edge away from the ground. Now, if we put the lead in edge into the ground, we would often see the good old classic duff. So if we can get the leading edge away and we can get the bounce to glide along the ground land, just like a plane would on the runway, we're going to get much, much better strikes, and you're not really going to need to rely on the bounce.
