Chip and Run Tips by PGA Teaching Pro Ged Walters

The key to hitting your chip and run shots is all about club selection meets the length of the ball has to travel in total. Now a couple of guidelines would be how much grass you've got to get to over between you and the green. So sometimes it could be five or six yards sometimes it could be five, six inches. Um, so it's making sure that you've got enough loft to land the ball on the green, but then also control that release down through to your target.

So generally seven, eight and nine iron would be really good clips to use because they give you the options. If I just turn sideways here, you can see I've got five yards of edge of the green. So seven iron would mean that I would be looking at a long shot because we're going to get a lot of runout from this carry distance here. So for the particular shot that I have in front of me, and nine iron is perfect because it's going to get me onto the edge of the green, and then it's going to get the ball running really, really nicely.
