When it comes to the tempo of the golf swing, a lot of people really confuse it with speed. One of the big terms that I hear a lot, especially when teaching is or swung to fast there, and nobody really swings too fast. I would say we're less, you're swinging faster than maybe 130 miles an hour. You probably need to go faster and faster, but how can we control the tempo and still create good speed?
The first thing we need to do is warm up. That's the number one and start to get a feeling of how the flow the swing goes, and then how we move the body at the right speed. Now, some people will move faster than others. Some people will have more explosive movement from their body, or theirs will be a little bit more controlled. If you looked at tall players, you would say that somebody like Nick Price and Greg Norman, they had a really fast tempo, and then other players like Freddy Couples and Ernie Ells and more modern day say Dustin Johnson would have a more controlled, slower tempo, but they all managed to generate a lot of speed.
