The feet play a vital role during the golf swing but they are often overlooked for other issues such as shoulder rotation, what should he hips be doing, what should the arms be doing. So they can be very neglected but they do play a very, very important part because they’re basically allowing us to balance. They’re the stability for the swing and if we get the positions correct with the feet then everything above the feet is going to work a lot better.

So the correct role of the foot work during the swing is initially set the feet shoulder with the parts okay and get a really good balanced position. You should feel that you’ve got equal amounts of weights on the left foot and on the right foot so 50-50 between left and right foot and also feel your balance position between your toes and your heels. So you want a nice centered balanced position. As you swing the golf club back, the feet are going to stay very, very quite. You will place more weight onto your right foot in that balanced position. So make sure you feel here that your right foot maybe pushing down on the ball of your foot like you’re gripping the floor a little bit rather than allowing the weight to go onto your right heel. But the key here is that the feet stay flat. There’s no rolling over in the right foot, the weight isn’t going onto the outside of that right foot.

So during the backswing the feet are very quite just really keeping the base stable, keeping the balance. The feet start to come into their own initially on the downswing. We want to work on transferring the weight onto the left so we want to see that the feet start to rotate over and so the right foot is now coming on to the in step of the right foot. We’re transferring the weight over to the left so that by the time we’re impact we’ve got 70% of our weight now in the middle of the right foot, sorry of the left foot and we’ve rotated over onto the in step of the right foot.

The left foot wants to start to allow the weight to go onto the left heel because this will allow more turn in the hips so this is a really, really good position for the feet to be in a impact, the foot – the right heel is lifted and rotated over onto the in step and the left heel has the weight. As we swing to complete the golf shot we continue the rotation in the right foot so that the shoe laces of the right shoe finish pointing at the target but the left foot does not move, there’s no spinning action in the feet. So as we swing through this doesn’t happen with the right – with the left foot at all. It stays very anchored and stabled, it’s just the right foot that rotates through.

So if you’re struggling to keep that left foot still just try doing this as a drill. Hit shots where you just set up to golf ball and then place a ball on the inside of your left heel and then outside of your left toes. And work on making practice swings so that you don’t allow either of those balls to move but you do rotate the right foot through. This is really going to help you improve the footwork during your golf swing and you should see your starts have improved your golf shots.
