So correct feet position and golf stance is going to be really important for a golfer to create really accurate shots and longer shots as well. It’s really important when you initially start, that your club face is pointing at the target. The ball is going to fly off that club face at a right angle, as a general rule of thumb. So position that club face in a way that it’s pointing at the target. Now position your feet so they’re together and in line with that club face and if you make sure you’ve got your feet inline with that club face, with the groove’s on the club face, you are now going to be able to take your stance so correctly. If your feet are rotated at exaggeration this way, as you split your feet you’re now going to be aiming to the right.

If your feet are rotated more this way, as you split your feet you’re now going to be aiming too much to the left. So once you have the club face in position and the club face is going to allow the ball to go at the target, draw a line back from the grooves, on the club face and check that your feet are inline with those grooves. Now split the feet into your stance and what you should notice here, is that your feet are now aiming slightly left of where the target is.

So to have a look at where you’re aiming now place your club directly across the front of your toes and then you can stand back and actually have a look at where your feet are pointing. What you’re looking for is what we call parallel left and the easiest way to explain what parallel left is, is to think of a railway line. If I take two alignment poles, if we want the ball to fly down this alignment poll; so if I place the ball at this end of the alignment poll and the alignment poll is now pointing at the target, your feet should be parallel to that alignment poll, but they should be to the left of it. So your feet don’t actually point at the target.

There’s a gap between you and your ball as you are standing in your address position, so it’s important that your feet are aligned in a way to allow for that gap. It’s the ball we want to fly at the target, not your feet to aim up. So just remember to improve your alignment, set the club face and then check that your feet are in line with the club face. Once your feet are in line with that club face, step left and right to take your stance and this will allow you to go into the parallel left position, just like the railway line and the ball is going to fly beautifully down the far rail at the target.
