Hi I'm Tom Stickney Golf Magazine Top 100 Instructor and today I want to talk to you about reading greens. The protocol that I tend to follow on reading greens the 1st thing I'm going to do when I drive my cart up to the green is I'm going to look at the overall topography the of the land and I'm going to look at what I see from the fairway driving to the green. You know is the green sitting on a hill as it leaning forward or backwards what have you. You get a lot of information when you drive up the green as you look at from a 100 yards. The 2nd thing I do is when I get on the green itself I look at the 4 corners of the green and what I want to see is based on where I am is that side of the green higher is that so the green lower or vice versa that gives me an overall understanding of what I'm standing on.

OK So we look at the green from 100 yards and as we're driving up we've looked at the green on the 4 corners while we're here. The next thing I'm going to do is I'm going to look at the putt from under the hole and I'm a look at the putt from above the hole and what I do that I'm going to try to walk under the putt this way so if this putt break in this way I'm going to stand over here so I can look up. So that way I have a little bit more understanding of what's going on with this putt evidently we need to do that you know and to speed up play but you'll learn to do this pretty quickly. So we look at the fairway and look at the 4 Corners we've looked at the putt around the hole now the next thing we want to look at is are there any anomalies in the green is there a ridge is there buried element is there a sprinkler line or something like that you know broadly on the green it's kind of put something in there that that impropriety the green. Once you have all that information then you have that understanding how and where you need to play this putt in order to intersect the hole I would highly recommend you come to the practice green he spent a lot of time surveying putts. Walking around understanding this because that is the best way that you can figure out how to read greens and once you figure that out then you can ascertain where you need to play it how hard you need to hit it and go from there but those 4 to 5 things will help you to read greens a whole lot better.
