Should I Read the Green Before Bunker Shots? (Video) - by Dean Butler

So the question should I read the Green before playing a Bunker Shot? Well, why wouldn’t you? Just imagine this scenario, you’re in the bunker while you know how to play Bunker Shot, but imagine I’m coming to you at the camera here, the flag is situated on about 20 yards, but the Green is sloppy from right to left viciously. If I was to set myself up and on so I’m just in my normal Bunker mode coming at the camera but if I was to execute that shot correctly, that ball isn’t going to finish where the flag is, it’s going to end up down at the bottom of the Green.

What if at the bottom of the Green I’ve got a Bunker waiting for me? “Not another bunker here,” you say or maybe there’s a lake there or any of those sort of things. So, why wouldn’t you read the Green? You might say, “Well, I just want to get out of the bunker.” Well, it’s one thing getting out of the bunker, but you know what to do for a Bunker Shot so, look at what you’re faced with. If the flag is here and the Green is coming to the right, then set yourself up and position yourself to the right-hand side, play that Bunker Shot to land to the right and let the contour of the Green just feed that ball back down to the hole. Think about it so, what about if we’re pitching onto the green and at the back there’s a lake so straight away the flag is on the Green, the Green is running away from you so, the last thing you want to do is come in and play a Bunker Shot execute it beautifully, but it pitches past the flag and off it goes onto the lake; penalties, penalties, penalties. So look at the Green, look at where you want to land the ball, look at the circumstance, the slopes and the dangers that are around the Green, go play the Bunker Shot, and look at where you need to land the ball, so think about it. Look where you need to land the golf ball in relation to the flag, in relation to the slopes and in relation to the dangers that are awaiting you if you don’t go for this routine and picture what you have to do. So simply remember do I need to read that Green before the Bunker Shot? You’re absolutely right. Read what you have to do, go in the Bunker Shot and hopefully from there reap the benefits of what you’ve just taken in. Put it into practice and you’ll see a big improvement on those bunker shots.
