Hi I'm Tom Stickney Golf Magazine Top 100 Instructor and today I want to talk to you about backswing length. A lot of times if you see the left frame here people tend to get their backs when just a little short type. While I am all for control the backstroke the one thing I want to caution you on is we all get older is whenever the backswing starts to get to short it's very very difficult to sequence the down stroke effectively because when you have a backswing that is in this condition right here and it's short tight to the extreme you don't have a lot of time to move the lower body forward let the hands and arms follow and it moves to the golf ball effectively. What I see a lot of times the hips will start and head off fall back because you're just working so hard downstairs to move through it that you just can't catch up with your pivot and everything kind of is out of sync. Now this gentleman does it very successfully he's pretty good player but we want to make sure that is that we get the backstroke length just a little bit longer so we can do we're capable of so you can see as John takes about at this position right here there's a top of his backstroke here.

When we lengthen it out just a little bit it doesn't take a lot for the sequencing of the pivot in the right frame to look a little bit more smooth and what you can see in the right frame as he takes it back we just told him to lengthen that out just a little bit. Now it's amazing how we just went from basically here to here OK if you look at the picture in the background that's not a gigantic difference and we're only talking about probably you know 3 4 5 6 inches tops, but all of a sudden when John has a little bit extra time to move his hips forward and everything going to lose the together a little bit more effectively. So that one thing you have to understand is when the backswing gets too short and tight as you'll see in the left frame it's very easy to be at a sequence with the pivot coming down because you're so worried about producing power subconsciously. In the right frame where you have a little bit more time it's going to be a lot easier for you to sequence the pivot control your low point and do what you're capable of. So remember monitor your backstroke length I am all for short tight on plane I want to make sure that it's not too short and tight and jerky as we'll see in the left frame in the right frame a little bit longer backswing will really help John to move to the golf ball a lot more effectively.
