What happens when you get your driver and you get the roller ball bobbles along the ground and rolls goes about 100 yards if you're lucky. What happens when you top the ball is it you're working so hard to hit up on the golf ball and when you do that your weight has to hang back that moves the low point of the club backwards and that means you hit up on the golf ball.
