One of the most common questions I get asked as a golf coach is; when should the club be moving at its fastest? And the main issue for golfers really, is that they move the club too early on the down so its gets moving too quickly, too early on the down swing. So as you swing the club back, if we’re looking at the down swing, the club should gently start to accelerate and the fastest point for the club to be moving is through impact and just through the ball.
So the fastest point for the club head to be moving, wants to be on the left hand side of the golf ball here. So if we start the down swing, and you try to accelerate too quickly, you’ll end up releasing early and loosing all of your power. It may feel like you’re going to hit the ball hard, but in actual fact you’re loosing your power and the club head speed before you get to the ball. That will cause you to slow down as you hit.
So what we want to do is work is work on from here, just gently increasing your acceleration down towards the ball. Once you get to about this position, then feel like you’re cracking a whip with your wrists so that you really create some club head speed that will gain you a lot of extra yards.
