Hi I'm Tom Stickney Golf Magazine Top 100 Instructor and today I want to talk to you show you that having the wrong loft on your putter can affect players and them not even know it even at the very very high levels. As we watch this particular tour player putt you can see the blue line talks about where the putter goes as the top of his backstroke as he comes down you can see the low point is a fraction from a golf ball and he starts to hit up on the golf ball. As he started up on the golf ball we can see if we look very close the ball starts bouncing and then starts to roll about where that red line is right there. OK So if we look at the 2 lines are drawn the green line is his club shaft at address and the orange line is his club shaft of impact and you can see he's kind of backed the club up a little bit. What happens is the club starts to flatten out and if it starts to move upwards if you back the shaft up you are adding loft to the putter so therefore when this particular player comes down the putter starts to flatten out there's a low point pre impact he gets up on the golf ball but at the sitting up on the golf ball he leans the shaft back a little bit therefore adding lot to the putter.

So if his putter came out of the factory at 4 degrees and he back it up a degree he's got a 5 degree loft putter and therefore the ball is going to tend the bounce and jump and if you look real close the red dots are drawn up here all the balances in the blue dots or the red dots the bottom are all the bottom parts of the stroke. So you can see the club ball bounces and look how high this ball is off the ground right here and that's a couple inches post-impact. So what you can see is by adding a loft to the putter you can cause yourself to have a chipper and if you look at the stroke real quick fast you can see the ball starting to bounce. So it's very very difficult for this player to have a very solid consistent role in the golf ball if his ball is bouncing so there's 2 ways you can alleviate this. Number one you can change the stroke and what you can do is you can make sure that the hands are less flippy coming through and stop the shaft from backing up that will stop you from adding loft of the putter. The 2nd thing you could do is that address you could figure out what the static loft of the putter is what say that it's for his most Ping putters come out of the factory around 4 if you de-loft it about 2 degrees now as a 2 degree loft putter. So what he does flip his hands a little bit which is his normal stroke at this particular phase in his career the putter bounces out and the ball starts roll better. So it is your job as a player to figure out what type of roll that you put on the golf ball you can go to a dew filled green early in the morning you can see if the ball skids or bounces or you can go to anyone with a sand putt lab if you don't know where one is you can go to scienceandmotion.com and that will help you to find out what the static and dynamic loft of your putter is but what you can see more than anything else is whenever this player flattens the putter out behind the ball as he does right there and he gets up on the ball it starts to bounce and if it starts to bounce he's going to be in a world of hurt. So take the time to audit the static and dynamic loft your putter find the sand putt lab and I think you're going to be in good shape.
