Correct handle position for the driver - (Video) lesson by PGA pros Pete Styles and Matt Fryer

During the set up with an iron we have to encourage a golfer to position the handle of the club in front of the golf ball which in turn can lead to improvements in the impact position. However contra to this iron position, with a driver we often encourage the handle to be positioned comfortably behind the golf ball as this produces a different angle of attack and therefore a different flight which in turn is more suited to the driver swing.

We often think about the position of the clubhead during different parts of the golf swing. The clubhead is obviously important because it hit the ball which go down the fairway but the clubhead is connected to the shaft connected to the handle and I'm connected to the golf club by the handle. So I'm going to argue that this is really important and the position of this is really important particularly the position of this in the set up and also the setup of the driver and yes we will have a massive influence on what's actually delivered down at impact.

As we all know drivers probably the hardest club to hit in our bags and if we can do some things early on that you know don't involve hitting and put us in good stead for hitting it hopefully it should become a little bit easier. The reason for this tip specifically Matt as well is because the driver the handle position is different to a lot of the handle positions for normal shots. So I would like you to start with is just a quick difference of why the handle is positioned differently from a driver through an iron and then an understanding of how we can remind the club golfer of the average golfer that wants to improve on the driving range on the golf course the handle position of the driver where it should be all of the time.
