The Only Lag Drill You Will Need – (Video) Lesson by PGA Pros Pete Styles and Matt Fryer

In this video tip PGA golf professionals Pete Styles and Matt Fryer show you the importance of creating lag in the golf downswing, and how this can positively affect the type of golf shots you were aiming to hit. A great practice drill for this is to hit low punched golf shots, where the handle of the golf club is leading the club face through the impact phase, which in turn reduces the loft of the club face and creates a lower, more penetrating ball flight. This, in turn, is the result of creating more lag.

I'm going to want you to talk to me about like a good topic or you talk about what like is why it's important what might we see with the golf that doesn't have you know can I go crazy too much live or does it on time and then give me a drill to help an average golfer improve like OK So firstly we need to understand what it is you know don't know what it is and why we're trying to create it we're already down the wrong path so when we talk about like and if you think watching any golf on T.V. or when you do watch in person and stuff and anyone who swinging it nicely what you'll tend to see is an angle that's created between the shaft and the leader so in the back swing is a club is moving fast a working battle to the top of the factual. Now what we tend to say in a good swing is something where we get to a position where the whole looks like this part is the arm gets to the point where it's parallel to the ground so this is where we 1st when L. Yeah got an L. shape a classic old L. shape sort of drilled and what we tend to see with some people in the thought of you know the swinging the golf course all the with the arms in the hands on taking part would take it all up and now we see you know angle created and it comes all from this wrist in even as we're stored addressing it we can get the feeling of what the wrists want to do literally just by leaving our arms while the arm cocking the wrist open down and then if we are later swinging back in we can see now I've got the L. position.

The reason we need like in the golf string. Obviously our ball's there were trying to advance it further down towards the hole sometimes it's of great distance it could be two three hunderd yards you know trying to hit it so we need to create call that speed to actually get this power generated to get the ball out there so when we do get the angles created we have something now that we can on load and actually create a bit more speed if I were to even have no like here it looks a lot more laborous than something where just all of a sudden letting the angles do a lot more of the work for me so it's a case of creating an angle of then get rid of the angle in the downswing Yeah we've got to get rid of it at the right time as you said you know what do people do wrong some of the things that we would see when there is no like created a lot of the time if I was a set up to the ball I didn't have any angles created all coming down I'm impacting quite early in the ground shots having shot yeah a lot of lot of big divots take a lot of ground goes like most of our either yeah limited call that speed and those are those fast shots and also if we were doing this we are quite intelligent being so the body then sometimes makes an extra manipulation to try and actually save us from the call going into then we might see the top 2 on the thing one because we start to get the body working in a direction we wouldn't want to so from 11 follow it can lead into all the faults on Fallen and 3 issues of fats things about strike young and not very much power either. Exactly so now we're going to ask not to give us an exercise that we can work and if we think those are our issues like in before badly how can we like that so for me I would imagine yourself myself and I've been in the situation where you've hit a car drive and it's manage the score fluff into the trees or something like that. Every round but what we tend to see that there's going to be some overhanging branches and I like to use this scenario with a lot of my students because it puts a good visual in your mind it's great having a drill but if you can relate it to a situation it's going to be easier to get the feeling in place than what we try to do then you know we've both got 7 iron out here we won't be hitting our normal full shot because it's going to go up into the canopy of the trees and what we try and do is hit something where we keep the ball lower.

Now in doing that if I were to keep the ball level I would have to do is reduce the loss of my golf course so as it comes into the golf or what we see here now is the handles leading the had and are still some angle created here as opposed to me hitting it normal or even trying to help the OP I get like that keep it low a lot angle created now talk about the hands winning the race how to get past the finishing line Yeah exactly yeah yeah they're going past the ball as opposed to the head to getting out in front of the hands like we see when we've got a loss of angles too early in the golf for a lot of you want I want to see it low low penetrated driven OK Yes So the thing to know once I do make this wind is well it's not that I'm going full out I'm not hitting the full swing it's getting that feeling if you are someone who struggles with creating no lag or losing early you go in at full speed you know going to be able to recognize it so. Yeah a drill Yeah so 50 percent swing and just trying to really focus on like you say that a low penetrating shot that I've got my hands in front of the club that is a hitter I'm not going for full distance. You know that so you can supposedly 50 feet lower than I'd normally hit it and that was a 7 on 7 I definitely would have come under the tree but not so it's not in this position it would come out very very like then it rose up with a little bit of oxygen into the sky but it wasn't one of those flicky the high shots that definitely have the penetration. Yeah so Matt thanks very much for that therefore we'll just found what is lag why it's beneficial what's of the faults of not having you know if like I'm not finished off there with a great little tale of how you can put the ball on the driving range the next time you're on the range have a little practice session that feeling like going to put the golf all out loud what less than full power see forgettable flight to come down if you can do that's a good sign you're creating maintaining the wagon so you have the golf we think that's going to definitely help improve your iron striking next time on the golf course.
