Fairway Woods - Lesson by PGA Pros Pete Styles & Matt Fryer

In this video PGA golf professionals Pete Styles and Matt Fryer will show you the secrets of sweeping your Fairway Woods long and straight into the air. Initially we will look at the correct ball position, follow by the process of driving the body weight forward to create a very smooth and well-balanced follow-through position. We should notice an improvement to the consistency and the ability to strike the Fairway Woods cleanly which will result in longer, straighter Fairway Wood shots.

Matt I think in golf we find that the most satisfying shots are often are most hardest shots. Definitely yeah as a shot gets more difficult we approach it with a bit of fear and interpretation, but if we can pull this shot off we get a bit of applause from our friends a bit of a pat on the back. It gives you that uplifting feeling and one of those most difficult shots is going to be the fairway wood taken straight back. Yeah personally I would say it is probably the hardest shot in golf you know we got a longer golf club a less lofted golf club, and we actually don't have the help of it being pegged up now we have it set flush on the floor so it is going to be difficult from there. So a little bit more difficult maybe when you haven't got the tee peg and the bigger club head. You look at the size of this club head here it's much smaller than the standard sort of 416 giant drivers that we're now using and sometimes not even a good lie it might be sitting down a little bit. Yeah definitely so if you know to firstly just to understand it is difficult you know to give yourself a break sometimes if you are going to do it and you pull it off really well done. So there are a couple of things we can do though to make the chances of pulling off happen more frequently. So give us the best to look at 2 to 3 different techniques here the best 2 or 3 different techniques for the average golfer to hit the best 3 wood shots from the floor. Yeah OK so firstly you know number one we're going to help it up would be one of the big things. I would suggest not because the ball's already on the ground so to try and help that up in the air is going to be tough because there's not much ground underneath it. Exactly yeah so big big thing we'll say I would imagine that the most common shot we'll see with this goes wrong is the topped one where we get the guy that stands in he's got that thinking “you know 3 wood whatever it may be I've got to get this up in the air quickly tough one I'm not going to normally get it up quick and get it and help it up oh I missed it.”

Over the top of the ball because they're trying to swing from low like they are used to with a driver but the driver we're on the air with this we hit with this angle of attack that we suggested. Definitely yeah it's again a bit of weight transfer as well from this point so what we're going to be looking for is something where when I made that poor swing that everything I did was working away from the ball and trying to produce sort of a scooping manner or a scooping action where we are trying to get the ball more towards up in the air. What we're going to try and do something like we have with the irons not as excessively. We are still going to try to get our weight towards target. So first things first we've got the ball further up our stance so we're not going to hit down on it as much as we would do with say a 7 iron. So as we see here now in my set up position the ball a little bit more toward my lead foot. Now as I've done as I've said once I do transfer the way towards my lead foot I'm only going to get a slight divot and I think that's the one big takeaway we're still trying to make a divot in this shot. So a little sort of scuffing of the ground after the ball. Yeah a little bruising of the turf if we can just get that to happen we're going to have a lot a lot more consistency with actually getting the strike and getting it air born as we go through it.

Good stuff now in terms of the lie the lie isn't very good? What if the lie of a sitting down in the long grass but I'm still 220 out and I still want the 3 wood? OK so it is going to be tough from there it is going to be hard it might be that you go to a hybrid sometimes if you are understanding the lie it might not be that the 3 wood is the club. If it is again we're going to happen to come down on top of it a bit more. We are going to have to squeeze it out of that lie and get a bit of ball then turf. So it might be that we pop it a little bit back in our stance and we get a little bit of a steeper angle of attack we're not getting a shallow groove thing that we might get a little bit more down into it. So we can move the ball a little bit depending on the lie but we notice if the ball comes back more the 3 wood might not be the option we might play a more loft version. That is why the fairway wood family would set would even bring in th hybrid clubs that you mentioned because they might actually help us get the ball. So ball positions important the feeling of striking down in terms of the swing changing much in the swing of the standard swing? Standard swing pretty much but again let's try and swing within our selves let's be in control it's like I said I personally think is the hardest shot in golf. So if we're trying to hard trying to think right well I'm two thirds out yeah I'm really going to push this one now all of the sudden I'm not balanced I'm not swinging how I normally would do. The chances of me connecting with that off the jack and it's getting down really minimal. The best way of sort of making that more controlled swing is a good positive sets up and balance. Yeah definitely so we've got a good balance right ball position and a good little bruising at the turf should hopefully lead to some better strikes with it so hopefully we'll be walking away with something that would look. Great I'm feeling confident after all that advice. Nice and smooth just take a little bruising of the turf. I took it well. Flew it very very nice like a little bit so it came through the low and that really committed to hitting down on that I think that's great technique for the for the club golfers and yourself included to make sure you really commit to getting down through those 3 wood shots. Spend a little bit of time out the practice ground on the golf course you know on the driving range working on that side but to try and hit your best ever fairway wood shots.
