If you wanted to improve your Putting Stroke and take fewer shots around the green then have a look at the best Putters in the world today and all the leading top players; all the players with low stocks on their Putting, really hold the finish. And there’s quite a few reasons for wanting to do this, but if you are holding, your finish it gives you a lot of information and feedback as to what happens during the stroke and if you start to work out the position you get into on the finish and the ball has gone into the hole, you know what to repeat more frequently. So holding your finish is absolutely crucial. So, if we set up here, and I’ve just created a channel with two alignment poles to show you the target line going towards the hole, if you hit the putt and then just let go of the finish, you’ve lost all the information as to why the ball will have moved left, right or gone in the middle of the hole. So you don’t really know what to repeat on the next stroke to either improve the stroke and the results or to copy it and hold the ball again. If you hold your follow through, you’ll now be able to get a lot of information from that position. So first of all on the follow through you are looking to see if the Putter Head is still on the target line. That’s what we are aiming for. If you’ve pulled the Putter Head to the left of the target line, there’s a good chance that you’ve hit the ball left. So hold the position and you should notice the position you are holding the Putter Head in, is directly over the target line. So you’ve seen the Putter along the target line.

The second thing you want to check for in this position when you are holding your finish is the angle of the Putter Face. Again, if the Putter Face is aiming down the target line, you’ll have hit a nice straight Putt. But if you’ve rotated it to the left or to the right, that’s the reason that the balls missed the target line and missed the hole. So hold the finish because it does provide you with a great deal of feedback, it will let you know the path that the Putter will swing along and it will let you know the position that the club head moved into. And if you can control the path of the Putter and the movement in the Putter Head as you are making the stroke, and you can keep the face aiming along that line, you’ll hit some really straight Putts, you’ll start to hit the ball much more down the target line and if you work on getting the speed right, you’ll have more Putts.
