Now, I'm sure you're aware of how important a practice swing is before you actually hit the golf ball, but let's put in an extra little move before you hit the golf ball just to make sure you're staying nice and lose. And this is what I'm going to term the pre-shot waggle. So, to the side of the ball, I've had my full practice swing where I'm thinking about the right movements that I want to make in my swing. But then as I set up to the golf ball, just to make sure I don't get too tense, I don't start gripping the golf club too tightly and feeling the tension on my shoulders, I just loosely waggle the golf club away, just let the hands and arms work the club away in that one-piece movement that we've described from previously.
Now, you think about the waggle as quite a natural movement because you'll see that in other actions, maybe in a pool action. So, someone's playing pool, they'll keep the cue moving backwards and forwards before they play their shot to stay nice and loose. Likewise in a darts action, back and forwards a few times before the dart is released. Standing perfectly still with the dart and shaking and getting too much tension doesn't really work. Similar approach to your golf if you can, a nice little pre-shot waggle, just to feel the club moving back on the nice arch there, keeping the grip nice and soft should really help you rather than freezing over the ball and get into a tight and tense and snatching the golf club away.
Remember, we don't need to lift the golf club away from the ball with the hands and the arms too quickly, it's just nicely turned away from the golf ball in one piece with the body. So, feel like this little waggle in there first just to stay nice and loose before you hit the shot.
