Swinging Too Hard In Your Golf Swing (Video) - Lesson by PGA Pro Pete Styles

Those are huge number of issues in the golf swing that swinging too hard can be responsible for and I think quite often a lack of understanding or a lack of movement in the left hip is one of those issues. Golfers that tend to swing too hard generally don’t have good control of what's happening of their front hip and the eye we need there is actually if you do have good control of what's happening to your front hip you will inherently have more power anyways. So you'll be able to hit hard by doing the right thing with your front hip rather than trying to hit too hard and therefore doing the wrong thing with your front hip.

So, a good golfer who is swinging in balance is able to control what the left hip is doing throughout the swing and therefore generate lots of power. A golfer that is trying to hit the ball too hard will often lose this. The first element might be that they swing back too far and lose the connection to the left side, so a golfer desperately trying to get loads of power is around here in the backswing. Left heels in the air, left knees collapsed, hips have got around to about 90 degrees; but there is nearly no resistance here, there is no reason to swing back down. So, a good swing has resistance, you can hear my voice, I want to swing back down a bad swing trying to hit too hard will lose the resistance; therefore will lose the power. So that’s one element where a golfer who is trying to hit the ball too hard has lack of understanding or lack of good movement in their left hip. The other area might be at the top of their backswing. They then swing down just with their hands and arms, so a golfer who is desperately trying to lather the ball too hard takes it to the top and really throws the hands and arms as it's fast as they can, but the hips aren’t involved in this and therefore they lose power; but the golfer that takes it to the top and understands how the left hip can help them generate power actually just raise that little bit longer; so the left hip will move across and rotate in the downswing dropping the club and behind them and then and then actually generating more power not less. So a good left hipped motion during the golf downswing is a real good key for generating power. A golfer, that’s trying to hit the ball too hard, will not have a good understanding of that left hip. So, focus on the good movement of the left hip, focus on trying to hit the ball less hard then you’ll probably find you'll actually get more power, not less.
