One of the skills to being successful with the reading greens in these longer puts is to be observant. Don't forget as the ball loses speed as it approaches the target is going to be affected much more by momentum and gravity so you really do need to study the area around the hole. Now you might say but enough time to look at putts and I don't want to hold up players and hold my partners though, but if you're clever and when you bring your buggy or your golf bag to the green and you position it somewhere halfway along the approach when you walk onto the green you can have a quiet look, and just take in the surroundings. Remember when you look at the hole it's really important to see how the hole is tilted.

If you imagine a coin or a CD if you look at the round hole it might be tilted one way or the other. So you can see the low point of the hole I can see here that this case the low point is this side so that gives me a clue that the ball is going to fall to the right. So try and be observant look at the terrain remember as it slows down it's going to follow that contour so I know the hole is tilted this way so let's give it a little go and see and when I aim it a little bit left. That is following the contours and that's not too bad. So remember be observant study near the hole that's going to give you a lot more insight to how the ball is going to behave in those dying seconds of its roll when gravity starts to affect the ball the most.
