Should I hit downhill chips and putts from the toe? Now when you’re out on the course you may find that you’re on a very fast green or you’re above the level of the green and you face a very fast pace chip down onto the putting surface, or if you’re on the green you find your self with a very fast putt down the hill to the hole. Now playing the ball out of the toe and hitting the ball out of the toe, can actually deaden the effects of the actually strike and send the ball out little bit softer. Now as far as the technique is concerned, it’s exactly the same but we’re just adjusting our set and our stance to make sure the ball is contacted out of the toe, the ball comes out little bit deader and a little bit softer and gives you a little bit more control on those fast chips and putts. So with the normal chipping set up we’re going to get our stance slightly open, our hips slightly open our waist slightly forward and our hands ahead.

Now normally on a chip shot we’d be addressing it, banging down the middle of the club face; but what we are going to do is take a little bit more room from the ball, grip down the handle a little bit more, and that will all of a sudden start the ball out of the toe. And once the ball is out of the toe it’s just swinging back and through as normal, just catching the ball at the toe with the club which will deaden the effect of the strike and send it out there a little bit softer. It’s exactly the same when putting. Normally would be setting up and getting that ball, banging out at the club face, but when we are addressing the ball getting out of the toe, when putting out a very fast green, which just bring the hands back a little bit more, just to address the ball out of the toe, and from there when you putt, it’s just contacting out of the toe, getting that dead kind of feeling on the strike and it will come out a little bit softer and make those downhill putts and when chipping those downhill chips a little bit easier to control. One thing you don’t want to be doing is swinging hard and fast out of the center of the club on these putts because it will become a little bit harder to control. So change your set up, get the ball addressed out of the toe with the putter in the chip shot, on a fast putt downhill or a fast chip downhill, and hopefully you’ll be able to control the distance and get a little bit more feel on those tricky little shots.
