Is Alignment Important For My Golf Shots? (Video) - by Natalie Adams

Is alignment important on my golf shots? Well, a very simple answer to this is absolutely yes, it's crucial. If you are not aligned correctly it's going to be very difficult for you to hit accurate shots at the flag or where you want them to go. So alignment is crucial and you must work really hard on alignment. It's very common these days to try to improve the speed of play and really be playing quickly and because of that a lot of people forget to have a practice swing or to line up before they hit. They just rush to the ball, pick a golf club, stand aiming anywhere and then wonder why their shots are going all over the place. So if you want to lower your scores you’ve got to work on improving your alignment. The best way to think of alignment is to think of it as a railway line. So if we line up this way on to the camera, if we want the ball to fly down the red pole then we've got to stand parallel to that.

So our toe line needs to be parallel as though we’re looking straight down a railway line with the ball flying down this rail and you standing on the near rail. So alignment is absolutely crucial if you’ve got the club face aiming at the target, if you're now standing parallel to the target line it’s going to make it a lot easier for you to swing the club back but more importantly to now swing the club head back down that target line and in swinging the club straight down the target line with the club face aiming down the target line you're going to hit a straight golf shot. So let's have a look at how to get you aligned correctly when you're out on the golf course. The first thing that you want to do is before you hit the shot, is just very quickly stand behind the ball so that you can now imagine a straight line coming back from the target to the ball. So what we’re trying to do there is replicate that red line I just showed you before because that’s the line we want the ball to fly down. What I would suggest you do is before you then go to line up, pick a spot just in front of the ball that’s on your target line and now just work on aiming the club face at that spot that’s just one to two feet in front of the ball. Once you're happy that the club face is aiming at that spot. You know want to work on getting your feet together so they're in line with the grooves on the club face and that’s the middle of your feet in line with those grooves. And then take your stance up and what you could then do is double check either place the club or an alignment pole across your toes, and then come and stand back and have a look, and those two lines are absolutely parallel. So you’ve now got a great chance of making a good golf swing and getting the club head to travel directly along the target line. With the club face pointing at the target you'll hit really straight, you're going to hit some really highly accurate shots and see your scores come down when you're next on the golf course.
