Having your hands in the correct position, when you are looking at hitting the chip shot is really important, because it allows you to move the club head back correctly and with the correct movement in the club head on the backswing, you are going to attack down correctly, catch the back of the ball and down into the turf and you are going to hit a really lovely high chip shot, rather than catching the top of the ball or catching the ground first. So setting the hands up correctly in the address position is absolutely vital for this. So looking at the correct position for the hands, for chipping, we need to set the hands, so the hands are ahead of the ball. That means, as you are looking down at the ball, the hands are on the left side of the ball and the club head.

Work on having a really straight line from the left shoulder down the arms to the hands, and then from the hands, that line just extends down the shaft and to the club head. So you have got this really straight look at the address position. And that’s going to allow you from that, because the hands are ahead, so just pick the club head up quite nicely and then be able to drop it back down to the back of the ball. If you are not quite sure where the hands should be, a really good tip is take an alignment pole, just place it behind the club, so that you hold the handle and alignment pole, this alignment pole needs to be on the left side of your body, so it’s directly behind your left arm, but because that pole is behind your left arm, and your body is in the way, it will really get you to set the hands in that forward position and you can actually play the shot with that alignment pole in. It’s a good way to practice to make sure your hands are in the right position at both set up and address. So work on that little tip, I am sure, you will find a massive improvement in your chipping action.
