So many amateurs are fascinated by that parachute shot you see Phil Mickelson play, but really is it that difficult. Well to be honest with you it doesn't have to be that complex. Yes you can play them like Mickelson with a long lazy stroke and slide that club under the ball but it's a very very high risk shot. One of the biggest things you need to understand with lob shots is that the loft of the club is predetermined. So just using this magnet if I just pop this on the club face. So there's the loft of my lob wedge fifty eight degrees but you can see if I open that club face immediately it's almost vertical. So before I even made a stroke at the golf ball up predetermine the loft before I start. So half the key in just getting the set up right. So if I lay that face open keep the shaft fairly neutral so don't lean forward too much. Then I'm going to adopt a grip where my right hand my trail hand is weaker it's more on top is not underneath.

If you are prone to having a strong grip on underneath I'm afraid that will close the face and stop me from playing these shots as well as you could. So weaken it a bit and bring it over on top and believe it or not you don't need a lot of fancy wrist action if you swing the arms with this loft the ball's going to go up. Remember I said that you created the physics at address. If this lofted club collides with that ball and it's already got a loft on it it's going to go up so I don't really need to use my wrist as much as I think I'm going to. Have a slightly wider stance the ball is going to be positioned marginally forward and the Y shape formed by my arms and club I'm just going to swing back and through and remember I'm letting the loft do the work. So let's give it a little try so I am going to open the club face as I said open my stance a wee bit keep my right shape nice and firm and just let the loft do the work and that balls is going to float up in the air. So remember predetermine the loft in address you've already done three quarters of the job then it's just a question of brushing it off and let the club do the work for you.
