Tom Stickney – A Top 100 Golf Teacher
We're on Number 16 of the die very very long long par 3 as a matter of fact it's 221 yards to the green itself. Now the 1st thing I want you to understand is when you're on a long par three you gotta change your thinking OK because any time you're on a short of a par 3 you know we're obviously a lot more comfortable hitting shorter irons ok but for a long par 3 to change your thinking you can't let this intimidate you. The 1st and we have to understand is this is a downhill hole so even though the yardage says 221 it's probably playing about 200 now the next thing you want to you want to always tee the ball up now here's the key when you take the ball up on a long par 3 try to tee it up just a touch higher that gives you the best chance to sweep that golf ball hit it up in the air and make sure you carry that golf ball long enough to get to the green.
Now the 2nd thing were to look at as we look at how the green is designed we see the green kind of goes like this we know there's a 2 bunker short left and we know there's a backstop on the right side of the green. So if we do hang this ball the right it has a chance to hit the hill and kind of kick down towards the left so what I'm going to do is I'm a tee the ball a bit higher and I'm going to make sure I am on the right side of the green because if I happen to push it a little backs side if I happen to tug it I have little chance to hit the green as well. So here we go tee the ball just a little bit higher I have plenty club to make sure I get there I'm going to aim at the right side of the green and see what happens. OK So that ball kind of funnel off to the right let's see if it comes down big hop and it's go pretty close to the fringe so we know that by playing this golf hole the way is designed using the architect's backstop we have a lot easier chance to hit the green. So remember change your thinking on these long par 3 threes use the hill to your advantage and I promise you you'll be on the green more often than not.
