Now hitting up on the drive to give yourself that more power isn't enough to guarantee long drives. What you need to do is control the spin on the shot as well. This is one thing that Rory Mcllroy does fantastically well. He is able to hit up on his driver, hit the ball high, but with very low spin. That is why you see his drives and many of the top guys drives when they strike the ball carries a long, long way but then when it lends, it also releases out on the fairway so you get the extra yards.

Now this is all to do with how loft and angle of attack work together. Also there is the equipment side to this, so you can get drivers which are highest spinning which will generally be straighter and ones which are very low spinning which will go further but are harder to control. Now I use quite of low spinning driver, but what you can do when you are hitting shots, is try and get the right balance between what we are about to speak about. Now first of all, you want the tee quite high because you want the club to be moving up through the point of impact, hitting the ball first and then continuing to travel upwards. What I have done here is, I’ve got a driver which is about 9 degrees in the loft. Now that 9 degrees in the loft is a very low loft at golf ball. And if I was to hit this with a descending angle of attack, the ball would start off very, very low, raise up a little bit because of the backspin I was putting on it, but it wouldn’t carry very far at all. However once I move into impact with that club ascending through the point of impact, this driver will spin still quite low because of the low amount of loft, it has not got a high amount of loft, but because my club is moving upwards through the point of impact, it is now going to be launching the ball much higher. And that combination of the launch angle being higher and the spin being low because of the low amount of loft on my club, will give me that combination of a high launch, low spinning driver. And that really is what we are after. Everyone seeing that drive that just takes off, launches high and doesn’t seem to have any spin on it at all, that is the type of drive that we are talking about. And that is how you can achieve it.
