It Is All About Balance With Push Problem (Video) - Lesson 2 by PGA Pro Pete Styles

Now we’re going to investigate further about why a golfer might be getting the club too much from the inside, swinging from in to out with that square to path club face which is creating the big high block shot down the right-hand side. And one of the main issues might be the fact the golfer is not rotating correctly at the start of their downswing. One of the reasons for that could be poor balance or trying to hit the golf ball too hard. Let’s have a look at that in a bit more detail. As a golfer sets up to the ball here everything is looking nice, they’re nicely lined up, we’re all good. We turn to the top at a nice position; we’d like the club to come back down nicely either slightly from the inside or straight down on playing would be fine. But if a golfer gets the club too stuck far behind him, swings too much from the inside and hits this block shot, why would that be happening?

For a lot of golfers it’s too much lateral hip action. So they get to the top and they slide too much this way to their bodyweight quite aggressively in front of the golf ball, which in turn drops the club a long way back behind the golf ball here. And then whey they do turn the club comes too much from the inside, and the club face stays open to target and blocks the ball out to the right-hand side. So, from the front on, what that might look like, nicely up to the top, but then too much lateral – club drops too much behind the golfer, and they try and smash it out this way. That can also be a problem when you’re trying to hit the golf ball too hard. A lot of golfers when they’re trying to really go after one just throw their hips at it too much laterally, give it the big shove, and they simply don’t have the time to square the club face. So I think the key element here to make sure you’re not blocking the ball for that reason is to make sure you’re rotating your hips as they turn laterally, and also not trying to hit the ball too hard. So from the top of the backswing, the hips are lateral and turning at the same time to bring the club face more out in front of the player, more on line, and also not trying to hit it too hard, should allow the hands and arms to release rather than getting the hands and arms stuck inside with the club face too far open to the right-hand side. So hopefully better balance, not trying to hit the ball too hard, should allow the club to come down on a better line, and avoid those pushed or blocked golf shots.
