Why you Should Widen Stance Shorten Stroke When Putting in the Wind Senior Golfer Tip (Video) - by Dean Butler

Okay, so we’re out in the golf course, the wind has got up it’s so windy the trousers are let go and buffeting around there. So what should we do, is it the same sort of putting style and the putting green well. Well no the conditions have changed and we’ve got to adapt for the conditions that we actually face, so it’s very, very windy. So the first thing is just imagine you getting blown all over the place, that wind is blowing so the first thing is, we’re having the feet close together like willy-nilly. And then all of sudden you’re getting blown backwards and forwards, we’ve got to widen the stance we’ve got to get your weight and spread it. So if you’re normally like this with your feet, let’s widen that stance, let’s have a really good firm base that’s the first thing, okay?

The second thing that we need to think about, is like common sense, the wind is blowing all over the place, so what we don’t want to do, is swing the putter back like this, a long backs with long follow foot, because it will blow the swing all over the place, so that we’ve lost control yet again. So what we need is a short swing, keep it short and compact so we’ve two things in the very, very windy conditions, a big, nice, firm, wide base. And I would always try and swing, put the ball just inside my left heel and I would always try and keep the putt in line with the back foot, so I keep it nicely back and forward, back and forward. You can just imagine that wind blowing very, very strong and because my swing is not going back here where it could get blown all over the place. It’s that word, ‘control, control, control’ I’ve got control of my body because I’ve got a wide base, now wind isn’t going to be blowing backwards and forwards. I’ve got control of my swing because I’ve decided that a shorter swing can’t get buffeted as much as a longer swing. And from those two things all you have to do then all right the swing you might think is a long putt, I need a longer swing. Well all you’ve got to just pick the tempo, so from here instead of kind of going back at this sort of pace going tick-tock, we’re going to go tick-tock. So you can see all I’ve to narrow, is just increase the speed of the tempo that’s all I’ve done. I’ve not gone any longer, that is the key to playing good putts, the best of your ability and suits some of the most atrocious windy conditions that I’ve played on the windy course over here in the Great Britain. You need a very, very wide base, but make sure that putt, that putting stroke is nice and short, but pick the tempo up if you need be, downwind reduce the tempo to be a little bit softer. That’s the ideal situation, wider stance, shorter swing and hopefully you won’t be playing in too many windy days.
