Why do I hit my golf drives from the heel of the club? Now this is quite a tricky question to answer because you can hit in the heel of the golf club from lots of different positions during the down swing. However what you generally see is a shot will come from the heel if you’re a little bit steep on the down swing and if you come from slightly outside the line. So as you swing down into the ball, if your swing path is travelling slightly from out to in, in this direction, it’s more normally and it kind of makes common sense the heel of the club will actually you reach the ball first. And if the heel of the club reaches the ball first, that’s often the point of impact which is going to be produced. Also something which will help produce that heel strike especially low out of the heel, a real kind of necky shot is when you come into the ball slightly on the outside but you come in with a very steep angle of attack.
So your angle of attacking to the ball is very much down on to the top rather than a sweep away. So if you are struggling with heel contact, first of all make sure that you are out of the heel, use some face tape to actually identify where on the club face that you’re hitting, then check your swing pass, try make sure it is not out to in, and then check your angle of attack to try and make sure it is not too steep. In most situations it will be one of those factors. If you are struggling still with the heel strike after identifying and stopping those things, you could be very much from an inside path. But in general, in most cases it is an outside path, a steep angle of attack, and the heel strike as a result. But use face tape, have a practice, give it a go, try and fix those faults, and hopefully we’ll start moving that impact towards the middle of the club face more often than not.
