Why do I hit behind the golf ball on my wedges? Well the same plan suit to this is, as you’re coming in to impact you got too much weight on your back foot. So if you’re a right handed golfer, there is too much weight on your right foot and you’re leaning back as you’re playing the golf shots. What you’ve got to work on there is getting more weight on to your left side and also to get the hands on the left of the ball as you strike rather than over the ball or to the right of it. And also work on getting your nose position or your head position more left, because again that’s too much to the right. So if we set you already to play, we want to see that the balls in the middle of your stunts, slightly narrower than usual because you’re not playing with a lot of club head speed when you play a wedge shot.

Just draw the left foot back slightly, so it’s about four inches back, and that will just open the hips so that you can rotate through the shot well. That will help you get your arms through the shot. As you setup, we want to make sure we’ve got this forward lean in the shaft here, so that the hands are on the left of the golf ball and the club head is on the right of it. Want to put the hands on and create a straight line down the left hand side, so down the left arm, down the shaft, so that from the shoulder to the club head is completely straight line and then set your nose, so that it’s on the left of the ball, you should feel slightly more weight on the left side now because of that setup position. If you’re hitting a fatt shot, you’ll be tending to set with your head on the right of the ball, so your nose will be on the right of your ball and your hands will be a little bit more over the ball rather than in front of it. So the shaft of the club will be pointing up at your belly button rather than to the left. So from this position, we are in a great position to hit the shot now, what you want to work on is taking the club ahead away from the ball and then as we swing back in, rotating the hips towards the target and making sure that we come back in with this forward lean in the shaft. If you are hitting a fatt shot, you’ll be hitting more like this, so you’ll be leaning more on your right side, your head is on the right of the ball and the hands are on the right as you strike in the ground first. So here is a good drill to help you improve that strike position, just pop an alignment pole on the floor on the right hand side of the golf ball and then setup as you – word as we have just discussed. From this position here you want to work on taking the club head away and then strike in the ground on the left hand side of that alignment pole. If you don’t have an alignment pole you could just use one of your own golf clubs. But just remember if you do strike it, obviously you’re striking your golf club, so the alignment pole would be better so you don’t damage it. Just gradually start to nudge that in, you don’t have to move it all in one go and still work on striking the ground on the left of that pole. And just keep nudging it in until you’ve got it quite tight on the golf ball and then you can start to play your shot. Once you’re feeling more comfortable with that, reintroduce the ball, so if we now get to hit the ball, if you’re hitting a fatt shot, you’ll find that you’ll swing back and you’ll strike the pole and you’ll see that the pole moves rather than you hit the golf ball. But if we are taking the shot cleanly, if we are keeping the head on the left, if we are keeping the weight on the left and the hands moving forward, you’ll see that you can strike the ball without striking the pole. So just practice doing that without the ball initially and just gradually move the pole closer to the ball, once you’ve got it to about an inch away from the ball. If you can strike the ball without striking the pole, you’ll find that you really are hitting much better wedge shots and that you’re not hitting the ball fatt anymore.
