Hit The Inside Of The Golf Ball, What Does This Mean? (Video) - by Natalie Adams

Should I aim to hit the inside of the golf ball and what does this mean? Well you should always look to hit the right hand side of the golf ball as a right handed golfer and not necessarily on the inside of the golf ball. The inside of the golf ball would be the side closest to you as you are standing. And to get a firm strike on the ball, the club had once to swing in and strike the right side of the golf ball. What you want to do though is hit from the inside and what that means if we take an alignment pole to represent the target line, this side of the target line is called the inside and the far side is called the outside. And what we see more consistent players doing is swinging the golf club in from the inside of the target line so that they strike the right hand side of the ball.

So in order to do that, you’d want to set up, take the club head back along the target line, really make a good shoulder turn and then as you swing back down at the golf ball, make sure that the club head is staying on your side of the alignment pole or target line making sure that the club head is approaching the ball from the inside and then you’ll find that you’ll get a really square strike on the right side of the ball. You really hit the middle of the ball from the middle of the golf club. If you swing more on the outside, you’ll tend to cut across the target line and that’s where you’re slice will come in from because you’ll impact left or right spin on the ball or just hit the ball straight left. So looking at what it means to hit the ball from the inside, we’re talking about swinging from the inside of the target line and making sure that the ball is struck with the club head moving from your side of the target line and then down the target line. A really good drill if you’re struggling to do that is to just block this area off here, and that will ensure if you put your head cover or a basket into this area you’ll be able to strike your golf ball and all you have to work on is making sure that your club head doesn’t strike that head cover or range basket that you’ve put in this area and you know you’ll be striking from the inside. You’ll start hitting a lot more powerfully, getting more distance on your shots and your accuracy will improve.
