What Sort Of Poor Golf Shots Would Be Caused If I Have Too Strong A Grip? (Video) - by Dean Butler

Hi, I want to talk about what would happen if you had too strong a grip and what sort of shot they would actually create. So first of all let me show you what a strong grip is. A strong grip is when you put your left hand on and we wrap the left hand over too much. So it actually sits too much in the fingers. I wrap the left hand over and you can see now, you can see plenty of knuckles showing on my left hand, this is what is called a strong grip. And when the left hand comes over it pushes the right hand underneath because the left hand is wrapped over so far so the right hand will then get pushed underneath and this is what –a strong grip, okay.

Now what happens with a strong grip, it actually creates too much hand action too much wrist action, so with my hands being like this it creates a hand action where it rolls the club over on my back swing and then rolls on the follow through. So as you look from behind you can imagine the swing which would normally go more up and down is now going more wrapping around my body and then from here coming around a bit like a sling shot actually where the right hand throws the club over. So if you can imagine that sort of swing which is going too much around my body and then coming through hopefully you could visualize the shakeup shot I’m going hit is a big hook and the hook will start to the right and then bend right round to the left hand side. So a very strong grip creates a swing which goes too much around the body inside to inside, it makes your wrist go too active which then closes the club face so a club face which is square to the target line at impact it would close, it would turn over and as that club face closes because your hands are rotating the club around the body that club face would then spin the ball from right to left. So a strong grip is one that’s too much to the right, too much hand activity and it makes the ball spin from right to left. So that’s what a strong grip is and that’s the biggest and most probably the nastiest shot in golf, the right hand that is that big right to left shot; the hook.
