What is the Correct Technique for Senior Golfers to Use when Playing Golf Shots from Thick Rough (Video) - by Dean Butler

Okay, what we're going to talk about the balls now landing in the rough. It’s thick rough, and we want to basically think about the technique, what’s the technique that’s going to get this ball out of this thick roof. So well, first of all, the most important factor is get the ball back in play. I mean how many times you've been in the rough, you've selected a golf club, you've played the shot and you ended up leaving it in the rough because we gambled. We gambled. We didn't have the conviction of the club. We knew it wasn't quite right, the golf club. So first of all get the ball back in play, that's number one.

So with that sort of mindset and my ball is now in the rough. I have selected a nice lofty club. It could be a 9-iron, a pitching wedge, sand wedge, lob wedge. Remember we are in a thick rough, the fairway is there, we got to get the ball back in play, we can't afford to leave it in. So how are we going to play the shot, a lofty club one; two, open the club face slightly. Three set ourselves up with the ball further back by putting the ball further back it's going to create a much steeper arc. Remember it's no good coming in and sweeping the ball club for the ball. What we're going to do is go over the top of the ball we got to go down. So put ourselves in this position, clubface open, hands forward, get the weight on the left hand side to create this lovely angle of attack and then from here, what we want to do from there is we want to get that club up nice and steep. And then from there, we want to come down and execute. So remember there is your set up, that's the most important knowledge here and from here, let's take that club up, leaning on the left hand side. So the clubface is open, break the wrists and I will take that shot any day of the week. That is a really, really good shot in what would be a thick, thick rough here. Remember all the tips that we kind of talk about, they are all about getting into a position and once you get yourself into a position, it's relatively easy because the hard work is done. All you have to do now is to commit yourself to what might be a little bit newish range, but at the end of the day, is it so hard, no, you have got the tools here. There is the position; we have got the club up. We have hit down nice and hard, the ball has come flying up, we are out of the rough number one and two. We have actually got some distance back at that fairway. So there you go, there’s the technique for playing balls out of the thick rough, not as hard as you think.
