In this video tip PGA golf professionals Pete Styles and Matt Fryer share your desire to be a more consistent driver of the golf ball. As regular players, Pete and Matt know all too well that driving the golf ball more consistently can be a huge part of creating a better golf score and reducing your golf handicap. They will spend time focusing on three different areas of your golf swing technique that can improve your golf driving, including a smoother tempo, making sure the golf club is suitable for your golf swing and the technique that you use. Along with focusing on a more accurate strike on the club face, these tips should help you see more consistent golf shots and ultimately better golf scores.
Now the Matthew were both drivers back out again so this must be a driving test I think so this one is all about consistency and focusing on the concept that most golfers will have hit one or 2 perfect shots. Definitely yes this one we tell our playing partners about is the one we've been members the one that brings us back to the golf course the next week is the fact we hit the ball perfect the shot. Why don't we hit 14 perfect tee shots in a round of golf is because we're not consistent you know exactly it's the big word isn't it consistency and I think sometimes people are striving maybe for the wrong things for the driver. They want to go a little bit longer is why if we could start by building more consistency if you hit every facet in your next round of golf I would imagine you'd have a better score and hitting a bit further from the tees. Are you suggesting when we took 20 yards off 27 fairways that would be a good track a good thing for more and more accuracy has been proven. You know for club golfers what we need and all comes down to like you say a couple of key point of consistency. So I'm going to jump in is my 1st point being a consistent set up you know if we're not still fancy stand into it this why well this one and then. I'm going to be delivering different impact factors as I stand so if I can build a consistent set of each time I should be able to hopefully have better luck with the other things that will go on to think if you change you'll set it you'll swing would have to change to compensate. Yeah I'm going to move differently in my body to try and allow for maybe why I put the ball how I'm leaning to where I will find a way I'll find a reaction to try and get back to the ball to try and get out of the center.
So like to say such not normal one we're going to look for something now as we see from this camera. Where the ball is just inside my lead heel that we can see as it drops down from the ball of white ball was a ball position isn't it yeah compared to my you know pitching wedge my driver has popped right into the front of my stance. Now the thing we can see is actually the width of my stance it's along the club we are going to be swinging a little bit quicker. So I've built this really solid platform where one side make a little bit more of a quick a movement I'm going to be able to support the pressure that comes with that movement, and one final little thing goes well what I like to say with the driver as opposed to the irons. We want to hit this driver on the top we don't want to be hitting down and creating a different shot. We would do with the eye and so one thing we can do and sets up as we see here I'm just going to have a little bit of tilt away from the target line here and as I do that it's almost I'm looking down into the back of the golf ball. Now not looking on top of it this little bit of tilt gives me a little bit of perspective of the back of the golf ball here. I fully agree with that Matt even I think it's a very good subtable forward wide stance to lead back the lean back of the thing the field opens people yes on the lesson tee we give that advice and we lean back a lot of people really really don't like what I don't want to see people do is have the ball forwards and trying to get over to see it from the normal position from outside by said dropping the rear shoulder getting about being on the ball on task it's only it's only a minimal till it's well it's not a real excess of one as we do just a little bit of spine lean.
To go in the address position is going to be the same every time to keep it consistent. Yes about the tempo of the golf swing how does that change the status and yeah if we looked at someone you know a golf swing I grew up admiring Ernie Els modeled my swing on him. He looked every time the tempo was this I didn't look like he was trying to kill it like he had 3 wood pitching ones are the same tempo drive it came out and all of a sudden this different and he walked out and he won insanely quick over these tempo. Same thing you got into it built this consistent such a top yes the swing was a little bit quicker but the actual tempo of it something where each time he looked in control in control of what he was doing and he could stand there all day and the thing there was all day 1st see the British Open winner that sort of thing his swings stayed the same even on the golf shot to the final round pressure and yeah it wasn't thinking you know it's weird sometimes. If you think of even a good round you've been having lately and you've got that little bit of pressure coming down the stretch and if I only par the sole coming it.
Rush it too much were generally not going to see a good shot. So if we can just think about tempo definitely is a great swing thought thinking you know if it's so one and two and seeing that you've got real control over the time how you going to be delivering hopefully a consistent swing there and hitting some more consistent drives with it. You've got the same set up every time you talk about the same tempo every time. Now talking about strike the ball it's OK so on like can I in with our drivers we've got something where we have roll and bulge on the face. That is for the reasoning of if we were to hit a toe or a heel strike that is going to help it try and come back towards target but the club face isn't flat but you know it's not like an iron face it has this movement where the face does this and it also drills that as we see the golf club ideally. What we're going to be looking for is a strike that's coming from the center to put just slightly higher than the actual middle of the golf club that's going to give us a good launch angle. Also create a little less spin which is going to be a key to some good drives, but if we've not got this consistent swing in time but generally not going to find the middle of the face even if it is that you do swing let's say 3 miles per hour slower and you get out of the center. So as opposed to something where you swing 3 mph faster and consistently hit the heel of the golf club the one way young 3 miles an hour slower and getting the middle. It's going to be the one that you see more distant some more control over it because we're not going to have the curvature that we get from this roll and bulge when we get the off center it hits. So we've all seen all perfect drive because splitting the fairway down the middle 300 yards or whatever it might be we want to get more of those. Matt's advice that to get more of those would be a good solid set up position a beautiful smooth tempo that retains its tempo throughout the entire round of golf and a nice solid sense of strike and hopefully with those pieces of advice you'll drive will be longer straighter and more of them.
