If you want to be a successful fairway wood player it really is key you understand where the bottom of the arc occurs and you get your angle of approach right. A lot of you will struggle with a woods because either they have got the ball too central or you hit down too much on it, and even in some cases hit up too much on it. We really need to pinch that ball right at the bottom of the arc so if you ask me as a golf professional “What's one of the hardest shots in golf?” certainly is hitting good fairway woods. Cause the margin for error is very very small they think if they are using this hoop here we really just got that little window where we want to brush it so it's quite important you feel that the stroke is sweeping. The club head is traveling parallel to the floor and just grazing the turf that gives you an opportunity to use the loft of the clubs built with. So when you set up remember let the manufacturers loft determine the angle of the shaft so you're not leaning the shuffle forwards or backwards too much, but then you've really got to generate this sweeping motion.
So the bottom of the are keys kinda like a dinner plate it's really shallow and that's going to give you a longer opportunity to elevate the ball. As I've said before if you're heading down on it too much you're not going to elevate them now one little tip you can do on the range it's almost like large putting practice. Get some balls and practice initially just sweeping them almost like a chip and roll. So you can see here I'm just sweeping these balls and you'll notice they're elevated simply because the loft of the club is doing the work for me and I'm delivering that blow on a nice shallow angle of attack. So I'm getting the full benefit of the loft and then just expand these swings a little more. You can see that's just sweeping away nice and straight and when you've practiced those you can notice there's no thudding down on the mat. I'm not taking divots I'm just giving the grass a little haircut just taking the top of the turf off. Once you've mastered that then that's time to progress to the full shots and now I'm going to sweep this off fully swept in a way they're nice and clean. So remember if you can master that angle of approach even give it a little hair cut the loft of the club going to do all the work for you.
