We need to look at what the basics are of creating golf lag with the driver. Now, we’ve already spoken about you need to be hinging those wrists, but the question is, how do you get to that point? A lot of the hard work done in creating lag can be done in the backswing. If you can produce a nice full wrist hinge going back, it will make it easy to maintain those angles as you move down through the ball. So as you swing in – as you swing up to the top of the backswing, what you want to be seeing is a gradual hinging of the wrists, a gradual cocking up to this point at the top of the backswing, where you have a nice, great angle between the wrist and the shaft. So that is the first basic that you need to understand.

Because you're going to be holding this angle more as you move down through the ball, you need to try and get the angle set, as you get up to the top of the golf swing. If you have a look at some of the very longest drivers and especially if you look at the long drive champions, the amount of wrist hinge that they have at the top of the swing is very, very extreme. And that’s because it allows them to hold that angle much better, as they move down through the ball. Now, if you’ve managed to get up to the top of the swing into this position, another basic that you can then try and use is to feel like you’re increasing the amount of wrist angle in between the hands and the shaft. Generally speaking – generally speaking, most people aren’t supple enough to actually make that much of the difference, but the sensation and the feeling of that can really help maintain those angles as you move down through the ball. So very, very simply, let’s go to the top of the swing, and then from this position feel like you’re increasing that angle even more. Generally speaking, you won’t be able to do that, but this is a good basic to get the feeling and the understanding. And as always, before you hit any the shots, just have a few practice swings to try and get those feelings. So to the top, full hinge, and then just try and increase those angles coming down. And as we’ve spoken about, just allowing that release as you come through the ball. And that is a good basic way to get the feeling of what lag angle is with the driver.
