The Problems With Trying To Create Lag With The Golf Driver (Video) - by Peter Finch

So we've already spoken about the benefits of what creating driver like can give. However, there are some negatives to bear in mind. Remember, with most players who are in the pursuit of distance, they need to understand that with more club head speed comes a greater possibility to be hitting the ball further offline. It's amazing how many people try to hit it further without understanding that first that they could hit it further already by finding the center of the club face more. Generally speaking, if you're trying to increase the amounts of the lag within your golf swing, that will not help you find the center of the club more. It will increase potential club head speed, but it will not help you find the center of the club face. So that's the first thing to say, with more speed it becomes harder to find the center of the club.

The second thing that becomes harder to do is actually square the club face. If you're moving down into impact, and you're maintaining this lag angle as long as possible as you're moving down into the ball, you will notice that if I hold onto this angle for as long as possible that club face is pretty much still pointing towards you and then in relation to where the target is, it's going to massively open. So if you're trying to create lots and lots of lag as you're moving down through the point of impact, you need to get your timing absolutely spot on to try and square up that club face. That is one of the biggest problems that you see. People in pursuit of more distance will often forget the fact that they're going to find that it's actually just easier when playing from the center of the fairway. So before you in pursuing more lag, please first of all, try and ensure that you're fine in the center of the club face and that you have the appropriate skill level to try and square up that club face as you hit the ball.
