What Should I Focus On To Improve My Ball Striking? (Video) - by Dean Butler

So let’s -- let’s talk about what we should focus on actually perfecting the strike of the golf ball and the club face. I would say that most probably the most important factor on this is actually concentrating on your ball position. So for example if we pulled out a driver I see too many people just position the ball however they feel comfortable, mostly probably you might be guilt of doing this yourself where the ball is now centered as you can see almost in the middle of my stance. If that ball was too far back in the setup for the club you have got that would actually make you swing far, far too much upright, which means you are taking the club up and then down and you can see if I am hitting down then the likelihood of the strike is now going to be based most probably predominately at the tee peg coming off the top of the club, or if the ball was actually on the ground we would actually be smothering the shot, so ball position is very, very important.

If we went from one extreme to the other extreme and I put the ball down on the floor now for a 7-iron again if we had the ball too far forward for the 7-iron because the 7-iron should be quite central in the stance. So if we put the ball position too far forward you can imagine as far as getting that perfect strike to concern that because the ball is so far forward as the club returns and reaches the ball it’s coming up so the likelihood is that you are going to catch the ball at the bottom of the club as the club then comes up and catches the top half of the ball. So we really do need to focus on this ball position to get the best strike, so what is the best ball position? But when you go for your bag of clubs you have got 14 clubs maximum so let’s break them to two areas, let’s look at distance and let’s look at accuracy. So accuracy really starts from a number 7-iron and works up seven, eight, nine, a pitcher and a sand wedge. And really those ball positions should be central to your stance and the reason for that is purely and simply that with those clubs with the ball being in the middle we need an arc which is very, very much up and down, so by putting the ball back in the stance to the middle we hit down and through and that gets the perfect strike for those clubs. When we use the bigger guns so now we move to the 6-iron, five, four, three, two one driver, 3-wood, 5-wood, the ball has to move slightly further forward because these clubs are much longer and now their lot is now decreasing, so what we do now is move the ball further forward, that will actually create a swing which is now much more shallow and low as you take the club back so when the club comes back in what little loft you have got is now coming in nice and low and just catching that ball just on the upswing and that is the perfect ball position to improve the strike. So ball position would be my big tip here, middle of the stance for those accuracy club seven to sand wedge and put the ball just inside your left heel for those distance clubs which are all the other clubs in your bag.
