Why you Should Hold the Finish to Improve Your Putting Senior Putter Tip (Video) - by Dean Butler

To improve your Putting I want you to hold that finish. So what is the finish and why do we need to – what’s the importance? Well the first thing I’ll draw your attention to is look at the best players in the world, they are over that Putt they’ve lined themselves, so they do know that work and all of a sudden they are off that Putt and as soon as they actually pull that trigger and go through, they are here. And then they might go and look, but the importance is, is that they’ve held that finish. And the importance of holding that finish is to actually taking up information that can help you with your Putting technique. Let’s explain a little deeper.

If you are over the Putt and you just simply can pull the trigger back and go forward and then do this as you’ll watch it go and past the hole you are not really learning anything over where the ball is going. But if you can hold the position where you started, so I get myself over this ball and hold myself in this position and I’m going to pull the trigger whether I hit that hole I don’t, I’ve lined myself up, watch my body position, I’ll keep it still, you can see by keeping the body still and holding the finish, it keeps my body in exactly the position as it was when I first started. And remember Putting is all about keeping your body still and everything hinging from the shoulders, because it’s a pendulum, so we don’t want any body movement. If you don’t hold your finish this can happen with this left side. If I would start to try to follow it with my eyes as an example watch my hips as I come through. You can see quite clearly that the hips have actually moved to the left hand side. So the first when I was static and this time as I followed it with my eyes, my legs have moved my hips have moved and of course what is the end results of that? Well as I swing around I could actually end up pulling the Putts to the left hand side or I might actually end up kind of cutting the Putt depending on where my clubface was. So holding the finish is very, very important. When you are over that Putt and you’ve got your eyes over that sends that ball, the other factor is that if you go back and you hold that finish and then look at it, you can actually look at the path of where the ball is going, the body is still and this is now from the perfect setup, the perfect swing, the perfect flow of that ball rather than lets go into this zone where we pull the Putter back and then all of a sudden we go and then by pure look the ball is going to the hole, but look at the position here. Holding the finish is crucial, there are so many things that you can actually learn from that, learn from the world’s best, the world’s best they are over that position they mostly settle very similar to yourself, but when they swing there’s no body movement, there’s no hip movements. So when you go through take that Putter straight into the target and hold your finish. A good final exercise would be to go like this and count. So hit one, two look. Very, very simple that Putt from you hitting it unless a hole is just in front of you, the Putt is no going to be over in two seconds, so why not go hit one, two in your mind then look. You’ve held your body still that means that your body was in the most perfect position at impact and now you are actually enjoying the fruits of all the hard work. Very, very simple tip, we are here to help you so go and put it into practice and your Putting should improve.
