If you are wanting to improve your ball strike, then one of the first things I would consider you do is, assess what your current ball striking is like. Now you can assess lots of different parts of you game, but ball striking should definitely be in that and you might consider assessing it against another player, someone that you play with at the local course, you might assess yourself against the guys that you see on TV. But one thing I like to do is assess against my current handicap, well I get my clients to assess against their current handicap, should I say. So if I’ve got an 18 handicap golfer, we might look at how he drives the ball and work out whether he drives the ball better or worse than an 18 handicapper, then look at the other areas, fairway woods, hybrid clubs, iron shots, pitching, chipping, putting, bunkers all those different areas.

And the one theme that runs through all of those different shots is going to be ball striking. So you might get a golfer who swings the club really nicely, who puts really nicely, who chips okay, whose swing looks like it should playoff a 12 handicap. But he just strikes the ball really badly and therefore he struggles to break the 18 handicap. And the ball striking is almost a section in its own right because it doesn’t matter how pretty the swing is, and how good some of the good shots are, but if your ball striking is not up to speed consistently that’s the main focus on this, most 18 handicappers are going to hit great shots from time to time. But it might also hit awful shots because their ball strike is not great. So it’s the consistency of that ball striking and assess the level of your game against your current handicap. And if your ball striking is falling short and you feel like you and 18 handicap golfer, but your ball striking is like a 24 handicap golfer, yet your putting or your short game or your course management is like 12 handicap golfer, and maybe if you ball striking is keeping you handicap up where it is, so therefore specific ball striking session should be planned to go on the driving range or go and meet a golf coach and work specifically on ball striking. And like I said, ball striking isn't always about hitting it great ones, it’s about time and time again, good rhythm to the swing, good consistent setup, good consistent balance. And if you can be a really accurate and consistent ball striker, your handicap will ultimately reduce.
