What is the Correct Right Hand Position at Impact - Golf Tip (Video) - by Pete Styles

One of the interesting things about the game of golf is it a dual handed sport, it doesn’t matter whether you’re right hand dominant or left-hand dominant it’s not like tennis where you can pick it up and just play it with one hand. You’ve actually got to have both arms working together in synchronization but a lot of people generally guys right-handed guys who are quite strong through the right-hand, the right hand can over dominate the golf swing, the right hand can start to dominate too much causing pulls and pushes and top shots and fat shots and all sorts of bad things purely because their right hand is trying to do too much work. So if we specifically look at the right hands role and more importantly where that right hand should be at the point of impact. The first thing to make sure is as you setup to the ball you actually grip the club with the right hand correctly, you see a lot of people get the right hand too strong, right hand too strong just coming underneath this way with the palm of the hand facing the sky and then the right hand has too much influence from there. So initially just make sure your grip is nice and neutral, a good feeling for neutral is actually that when you extend your palm outwards the palm would face to the target.

So the palm faces to the target lay your hand on and grip it and you’ll see that there’s a V from the thumb and forefinger of your right hand would point up towards your chin that would be a nice neutral right hand grip. And if that’s the start position and the face is square it stands to reason that during the swing we would like to bring the club back and have the right hand in exactly the same position, any twisting or turning of that right hand would have manipulated the club face and would cause off center hits. So as I set up now my palm faces the target, my V point is up at my chin, I go through my swing bring the club back down and I should be able to release the golf club there and my palm would still be facing the target. It’s quite an interesting exercise to do this without the golf club and just let the right hand swing and slap into your left hand. So place the left hand here, take the right hand next to it, swing the right hand back and down and see where it stops, and if it stops and it square to the target that would be a good position to hit straight golf shots. If you have a tendency to open the right hand up too much during the swing you’d hit here, you’d hit with the heel first, the heel of the hand first, hand is open that ball is probably going to slice or cut to the right. Likewise if you’re too aggressive with your right hand and rotating it down too hard, you’d see the right hand coming there it’s pointing to the floor too much that would be de-lofting the golf club making the golf club bang left. So once you’ve done that exercise a few times, great exercise just to do at home as well just as a warming up exercise before you go on and play just bring it back and make sure it’s nice and neutral. Then when you implement that into your golf swing that right hand comes down its nice and neutral pointing at the target as you hit the golf ball and that should produce some straighter better golf shots.
